Chains Putting chains on

excellent method - I only wish I had known this before fighting with my new ladder chains for what seemed like days this past winter.

Interesting and clever technique. However, I can't use it on my Kubota B7800, as the wheel discs are solid and there are no openings through which to pass the "blue wire" or other holding device. I'm trying to come up with an idea that will work to hold the chains on my wheels while I rotate them to a good position for fastening them onto the tire. Any suggestions???

Have the same solid-wheel problem and have long thought that wide (WIDE) webbing attached to a simple rod/dowel through the chain end, just long enough to go over the wheel and attached to a similar rod that is stuffed under the tire ...drive slowly forward ...should work, but I use the barbell method w/wo a bottle jack.

I also have a pair of small chains--just a few extra links with open ends that make the temporary connection (usually sufficient to just do this on easy-to-reach outside, having hooked the inside...then, drive a bit, positioning the chains, remove the temporary extension(s) and attach.

That's how I'm prepared to put chains on, "in the wild", on my F350.

No place to put a bungie thru the wheel to hook the chains to? Try this:

If you have ag tires get a small dia rope like starter cord. Make a long loop of rope tied to the start of the chain like a sled pull. Bring the rope up over the tire past 12 o'clock and weave the rope in the lugs. Then drive forward to pull the chains up.

If turf tires make a longer loop of rope. Bring the rope all the way up and around the tire and tuck it in between tire and ground in front of the tire. Drive forward to run over the rope and pull the chains on. Stop often to adjust and keep the rope up on the tires.

1948berg, you, sir, are my new hero.

But I have a complaint; why did you not show me this far easier method back in the day, when I was having to chain up a truck & trailer for those salt hauls to the Sierra? Pretty inconsiderate of you. ;)

Ditto ... this works for me with R4 tires.

1948berg Thats almost the same way i did it on my jd 440a skidder except i would lay a short piece of chain across the tire tread 3/4 the way up the tire. I had a hook on each side, then hook the tire chain side link to each hook. Move the machine forward and up the chains came( with a little adjusting as they came up) kicked the cross chain out of the tread and tightened the tire chains. After running the machine a couple hundred yds i would retighten the tire chains and was good for the day. Mind you my chains were heavy ring chains that i put on daily as i ran the skidder from my house to my bush lot.

What you need is a tool like this for tractor tires.

I have been doing mine like this for 3-4 years works great no hassel.
This is the way I do it, works fine for me! No lifting
1.Spread the chains on the ground behind the tractor, spikes up!
2.Tie a rope through the wheel and to the ends of the chain. (not the sidechains)
3.Start driving slowly forwards
4.Stop and pull down and adjust the side chains sometimes
5.After a complete round, stop and hook the sidechains together
6.Then the center chains
7.Nice and tight

Take a final tightening after a good test run, if needed

If you are wearing running shoes, a T shirt and it is daylight in a dry parking lot, why do you need chains. I'm always wearing mitts, boots, heavy coat in 6" of frozen slush at midnight. Guess I don't live right....
