The Amsterdam Recorder. It's an evening paper. Don't know about a website. I'm sure tomorrow's Gazette will have the news. Unfortunate event, but we still have Hands!

Local CT Farm and Country store to close
By BILL SHEEHAN

Recorder News Staff

An Amsterdam farm supply store and the 14 local jobs it provides will be lost in a corporate reorganization announced by the store's parent company this week.

CT Farm and Country on Route 30 in the town of Amsterdam is among the 153 Quality Farm and Country and Central Tractor Farm and Country stores closing in the reorganization announced by Tractor Supply Co.

Staffers at the Amsterdam store said they got word on the closing over the weekend.

The entire inventories of Farm and Country stores in 10 states are to liquidate.

The company operates stores in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Delaware, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York.

Another area store, located in Cobleskill, is also slated for closing.

The stores have closing sales under way.

"We know the stores will sell out very quickly," said James Schaye, one of the principals speaking on behalf of a corporate venture group that made the decision.

After the liquidation of the closing stores has been finished, Tractor Farm and Supply, a retail farm and ranch store chain, expects to reopen 85 stores in the Tractor Supply format by the middle of 2002.

Tractor Supply Co. operates 323 stores in 28 states, targeting full and part-time farmers and ranchers as well as contractors and tradesmen in mostly rural areas.

Re: TSC Buys-Quality Farm/Central Tractor Bankruptcy

From the press release it sounds like the QFFs in Michigan will be OK. I haven't been "around the lake" since I put the boat away in October so I haven't been by my favorite store in Benton Harbor right off I-94.

Anyone know if the QFFs along the left coast of MI are still OK and intend to remain open?

Re: Quality Farm & Family/Central Tractor Bankruptcy..

I just read this thread and called my local Ct store to confirm it. I feel terrible /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif. I have to run over there now and see what last minute things I can purchase before they are gone. As someone else mentioned, there go the good prices around here. Fortunately, we have and independant supplier nearby that doesn't charge retail plus a markup for color additive. I will miss not only the store, but the people that work there. Sad...very sad.

I agree, we went to our local store today,10-30% off, place was packed. All I could wonder is where were they before. Maybe they would not be closing. I sure wish this wasn't happening, my favorite local store.

Re: Quality Farm & Family/Central Tractor Bankruptcy..

It was sad to see. Almost everything in the yard is gone sans two 7' blades and some three point mowers. The place was packed, like you said HR. I spoke to my acquaintences there and was told this all started last weekend, they were told their jobs and the store would be gone. I picked up a few things, mostly the 30% items I needed. I agree, where were all these bargain hunters during the year. Some of the farmers I heard speaking were very upset about the closing as well. I am not going to blame this on the republicans/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif, I am sure the media will. It is a simple matter of economics, slow economy and too much competetion along with taxes and gov't mandates that drive the cost of doing business and building products up. Like someone said, if we could export OSHA, the unions and liberal think tanks/w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif to foreign countries, we would be on level ground to compete again.

Re:Quality Farm/Central Tractor is Forever Closed...

A few weeks ago I replied to your original post that my wife had heard a "rumor" that Quality Farm and Fleet was going out of business, but that our two nearest stores in Warsaw and Columbia City, Indiana were still doing business as usual. Well we just found out that both are going out of business. By the time we found out most of the items that I would have been interested in were gone.

Re:Quality Farm/Central Tractor is Forever Closed...

When Quality Farm & Country opened a store in a year or so ago Mooresville, NC we were excited, as the local feed stores didn’t have the quantity and selection of farm and general supplies. After a few visits our enthusiasm waned to avoiding the store unless they had items that we needed specially priced in their sales flier. The staff was not helpful and would rather chat with each other than assist customers. Nobody would offer to load feed or large items. The manager would help when he was available but no one else was interested. I’m sure this is not the same at all of their stores but was our experience at the Mooresville store. It may have been a problem of expanding too quickly and relying on inexperienced management.
