Question on wire size for a 120v / 90 amp fcaw.

I'm not a proficient welder by a long way but I get more penitration with .030 than .035 on 120v machines. Truth is I haven't used a 120v in a long time and hope I never have to but if I do,I certainly won't choose a stick welder. This has been my experience. Where 240v is limited to 20amps,I can do far more with with my Pro-Mig 180 or my friend's Hobart Handler 190 than any 240v stick I've seen.
Which bring's me to my question for those above saying they go with their 120v stick when going get's too tough for their 120v wire. Will you expand on methods you use to get more penetration out of stick than you can get with wire on equal volt-amps? I have noticed every conversation about low power machines lead's to someone saying stick win's for thicker metal. I have a nice AC/DC Miller colleting dust because I'm presently limited to 240v 25 amps.

I'm going to pick up some 0.030 wire and tips next time I'm at home depot.
