I can rent a 450 Johndeere for a week and pay $1,800, or I've been told that I could buy a Dozer at average 20K, use it for a week and sell it for the price I purchased it. Could use some wise advice from the know!

Years ago I bought a JD 450 track loader to do some land clearing and take out some stumps... I kept it for about 2 yrs. and sold it for what I had in it..including the maintenance it needed...

It can be done but be careful buying any machine especially one with tracks...there is a lot to them and if the clutches, tracks etc. are worn or shot or close to it that can get real expensive...along with other possible problems...like you never know what you make break on it an how much that will cost..It is a gamble...spin the wheel if you dare...

hi i have owned several dozers and have been around them all my live from big to small , there are advantages to both renting and owning. 1 advantage to owning is no hurry work at your own pace etc.... etc... plus you can make $ by hireing out if you so desire. the disadvantages are 1 maintence, and purchase etc.... etc......renting is good also they have the investment in the tractor etc..... and all you do is pay for the use etc... but you are on a time frame etc.... this may or may not work for the job at hand and depending on what is needed. i personally prefer owning just my .02cts have a good 1

It all depends on what you need to get done and your planned uses for the machine, if you need some land cleared then you are IMHO better off hiring out the job to someone with larger size machine (Cat D-6, JD 650, ETC) will probably be much cheaper than buying a used machine then putting an unplanned couple thousand into it for repairs just to get your project finished or make the machine resaleable to get your (hopefully) money back. But it all depends on what kind of project you have planned.

personally id spend the $1800 an rent the dozer for the week.an id run it from sun up till sun down.if you had 2 or 3yrs of work todo then buying a dozer would be the way to go.

RENT, RENT, RENT. I owned, and rented. When you need one it's great to have one on hand, but then it sit's and sit's. Once the job is done, what are you going to use it for? When I developed my property, I bought, and it was great as when I got off work, could jump on it and take off some stress, but if I had rented, would have taken a couple of days off work and just got it done right away. Just my 2 cents.

About 30 yrs back, I bought a dozer for $4000., earned $4000 on a specific project, another $4000. doing odd jobs for neighbors and sold it fo $4000.
That was not counting all my own property work taht might have totaled a couple thow's worth.
All over about an 8 month span.
When I sold it to a contractor he wanted to pay with postdated cheques with no interest (4 months @ $1000 per) so I negotiated 3 truckloads of crushed stone for carrying charges.
All that to say it can be done, but luck was really on my side.
Maintainance costs to me were oil changes and a replacement hose that I snagged pushing fallen trees.

Today might be more feasable with an excavator as dozers are taking over as the popular tool for many jobs.

I would offer it depends on what you have to do with it. Is it only a weeks worth of work? Than renting would be the way to go.
Have several projects with several acres? Then buying/reselling would be the way to go. IMO.

I've rented, and bought. Currently own equipment that I will sell when I'm done my "projects".....problem is they take much longer than you anticipate.

I would just add that if you decide to sell, there's no guarantee you will sell in a hurry. You might have that dozer for sale for 6 mo to 1 yr if you are asking top dollar. In the meantime, you have to keep it running and in good shape despite crowds of "looky-Lous" who will call, come look, try to get you to sell it for next to nothing, and you'll never hear from them again. So, I'd say you have to save enough with buying to pay for all the grief you'll have as a seller.

All the rental yards I've dealt with limit hours per day to 8 (on hour meter) ....(addressing the "run sun up to sun down" idea....) Accumulate more than 8 hours per day, you pay for more days......

Buying a 'dozer can be a slippery slope....unless you really know your equipment. Otherwise, buy...use...sell for purchase price is doable. Buy a 'dozer with "hidden issues" and you might end up spending as much to repair as you spent buying it. Just be careful.

And...Someone who operates equipment full time will generally do more in the same amount of time as someone who's not so experienced.

And finally, there's the issue of once you buy, not wanting to sell.... I bought a Case 580SuperM back hoe a couple years back with that same EXACT plan in mind. It's still here :O I became rather "attached" to it and decided not to part with it. These things grow on you.....
