Hello all,
I was reading through and saw this thread and figured I might put my 2 cents in. I have changed allot of tires by hand (worked at a tire shop). Starting fluid and / or either works, but I wouldn't recommend it if you have never done it. It can cause a pretty big explosion and lift the tire several feet off the ground. I have done it but usually as a last resort. The blast can (looks like a propane bottle) works well, just blows a quick blast of air to inflate the tire, as stated before, you should remove your shrader(spelling?) valve when filling the tire for maximum are pressure going it. The straps work well as long as the tire isn't super cold. They sell a soap, I have always called it hardened Murphy's Oil Soap. Its like gold slime, we used it mount, dismount, and air up stubborn tires. You can actually lay this stuff around the bead and seal up the rim to the tire, as you put air into the tire, the tire raise and pushed the soap out of the way. Yes its messy, and yes it takes time to find the thin spots of hardened soap that keep blowing bubbles at you, but it works well. Dint use it in the rain, it is soap, makes lots and lots of bubble, especially on the side of the highway during a rain storm trying to change a semi tire.

It is hard to have all this equipment if you don't do allot of tires, allot of the "tools" are expensive to have kicking around for one tire. I know its messy but we have actually used grease to air up a tire, layed a bead of grease around the tire where its meets the rim, (yup, takes allot!!!!) like we did with Murphy's, and air it up, messy, but works and gets you out of a bind
By the way, if you do decide to use either (starting fluid)
- Have your air hose ready with the chuck on it.
- Put the valve stem away from where you put your fuse of fluid (complete opposite where your going to light the "fuse")
- I use my foot and "walk" around the tire, pushing down, and spraying either in as I walk, NOT TO MUCH, you want either that sprays out like paint, not a steady stream
- As you have complete your journey around the tire and the two ends meet, make a line going off the tire onto the ground away from the tire. Some people like to use matches and throw them at the tire, I like a fuse myself. Now remember, you want to far away, but you still have to put air in this when it ignites
- Lite the fuse and in a matter of about 2 seconds it will either go boom, and you will hear air escaping from your valve stem, which means hurry up and install the air line so the bead doesn't fall, or it will just make a loud "hiss", which mean some of the either dried, or not enough.
- I am not responsible for what happens !!!!
Oh, don't try this more then 2 times before you let the tire "cool" the tire will get hot and soft and trying to blow it up several times in a row could cause the tire literally to blow up
Good Luck
