didnt realize pure antifreeze freezes up easier then a mix.

Only some of it - wasn't using propylene glycol, eh? Found this freeze chart:

Factually, I never knew that either. AND I still don't know the difference between propylene and ethylene (and shinola for that matter).

In the future you can get a cheap hydrometer from an auto parts store. Like a big eyedropper. You suck some of the solution up from the radiator and count the number of balls floating. That tells you to what temp you are protected to. My tractor is at -40F for Central Maine. Then I noticed that the 10W-30 oil I put in is only good to -10 F if I want to drive it to clear snow. Next year I'll be prepared!

I had a friend that thought straight coolant was better too..Till his caught fire from an engine leak...

I wasn't aware that antifreeze was flammable.............I better read the label more carefully.

I try and keep my anti freeze as low as I can -45or better being fairly close to james bay this morning was -26 here I worked a few times in the very high arctic on Elesmire Island we used pure anti freeze reason water hard to come by needed for drinking . it never froze just turned to slush
