range selector for hst supposed to be extremely hard to shift?

Pretty much the same kind of thing you have to do sometimes to shift any of the old crashbox tractors. I learned to drive in old farm trucks without synchros, so having to roll gears around until they fit seems fairly normal. Some of those old trucks felt like they had boulders in the transmission - double clutch while putting both feet on the back of the cab and your shoulder into the shift lever.....

Mine has a clutch and double clutching doesn't do any good. Still stiff as he!!.

Soundguy, think of it the same as shifting the ole gear drive 4wd truck from high to low in the transfer case. Same exact thing is happening.

For example, say you're running 2,000 rpm in 4th gear, and you want to downshift to 3rd. For the current velocity let's say that 3rd would be at 3,000 rpm.
So, you clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out, rev the engine to 3,000rpm, then clutch in, shift to 3rd, nice & easy, synchro or not.

Both of my new Kubota's had a similar "problem" but worn in as time went on.Slight movement when shifting will help.

Anything you do to nudge the gears a little in one direction or other will help. It can be bumping the HST pedals/treadle, letting the tractor roll a teeny bit, etc. Just do all that stuff and make sure the tractor is stationary before you move the lever again.

The pedal trick worked for me, the range selector now shifts pretty much like a mania granny shifter. I'm super happy.

Unloaded a 1000# compressed alfalfa bale from the back of my truck using a sling.. Had the ac going, was nice..

You are correct of course. And that's all it took.. Just a hair of motion fore or aft and it was much easier.

My 98 dodge ram was like that. Short stick on the floor. A little roll helped.

Hope you enjoy the new tractor!!! Whole new world for you. I always considered you an "old school" guy in regards to tractors.

Funny thing is most people think of Hydro, and think of Hydraulics, and don't understand why the range shifting can be cantankerous. Of course the range gears have nothing to do with the hydro pump and hydro motor. They are just an old straight cut gear crashbox with no synchronizers in it stuck on the end of the hydraulic motor.
