As well, watch for the plastic tightening ring that it doesn't develop a crack from being put on real tight. I had that happen and it 'leaked'. Puzzled me for a bit before I realized that that ring was cracked. I just snug them down now. So easy to grab the spout and add some extra torque when tightening after filling the can.

Here's my solution: two 55 gallon drums, one on the stand, the other goes to town in my truck for filling. Then it's lifted with the clamp-on forks on the FEL of the Kubota, high enough to gravity feed/fill the drum on the stand. The nozzle, hose and water separator/fuel filter all from TSC for about $100. Gravity feed for the tractor, RTV, truck, and the 10kw Kubota genset in the shed. The 2nd drum gets refilled on the next trip to town, thus there are 110 gallons on hand, which is enough to run the generator 24/7 for over 3 weeks. Normal usage (only when the utility power is down, about 4 hours/day=18 weeks.) A stabilizer is added to prevent algae growth.

The person(s) responsible for the new and improved EPA fuel cans should have their own private h--l. They should be forced to spend the rest of eternity filling an endless line of equipment with their cans/spouts. I like the golf tee vent hole upgrade.

i bought this can by pure luck, but i'm happy i did. i used to just use whatever cans i had empty to get diesel when i needed it. needless to say, it was a confusing mess to determine whether i needed to get gas, diesel, or k1. i got this at home depot several years ago, and i'm sure they sell a different style by now, but i think this is the perfect can for filling a tractor - assuming your tractor has the tank on top of the hood?

C.A.R.B Compliant Plastic Fuel Can - 5 Gallon Diesel - Mfg# 05898

the trick with this is NOT to have any vent holes. if you do, you WILL spill fuel. with this can you are required to lift 5 gallons up to the top of the hood, but that's it. you don't have to hold in any awkward position, you just insert the spout into the tank and then stabilize the can (zero effort) gravity does the rest. the neck on the can has a spring loaded nozzle that opens ONLY when you have the weight of the can resting on the fuel opening. since the only venting is accomplished through the filler, once the tank level reaches the spout, the fuel stops flowing because it can no longer draw air. once the fuel flow stops, take the can off. the spring loaded nozzle automatically shuts off, so there is no fuel spilled, even when the can is upside down.

the only downside i can see if that some newer tractors have huge fuel fill openings. if that is the case, you could always have an adapter made to set over the opening so that the spout can shoulder on and allow it to open correctly. i will say that i have seen people try to misuse these cans a lot. i watched someone try to fill a tractor and they were lifting the can with one hand, then trying to pull back the spring loaded nozzle with the other hand, then try to pour the can into the fuel tank. if you have a top mounted tank on your tractor, these things are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I think the whole point of the thread is not to have to lift and hold 5 gallons cans of diesel on top of your tractor and stand there thinking about how much you despise that glug glug sound coming from that heavy, slow draining, plastic container you're holding.

You're suggesting exactly what this thread is railing against. :)

true to a point, but i was also commenting on all the people talking about the new cans and spouts. the ones i use require no holding of the can or pouring, and rarely do i have any spill at all. many in this thread have trouble with cans, and this style may be a better alternative at a practical cost for them, and it works well if you learn how to use it.

otherwise we've got a lot more information needed. how much will they be willing to spend? do they care if it is legal? is there any electricity? can a small roll around tank be used on the terrain there? the list goes on and on. given the choice, i'd opt for the big outdoor tank with electric pump. i'm sure you can get one installed for a couple thousand dollars, but probably not practical to replace a pair of 5 gallon jugs.

Ok! I must have missed something! When did the color yellow become the designated color for diesel? I always thought it was Green. I'm getting ready to paint my fuel storage system so which is it! :confused2: All of the stations around here and other places I travel have green hoses for diesel and my plant has green tanks for diesel.

All the "diesel" cans I see in stores are yellow.

My curiosity got to me so I called DOT. The official color desination nation wide is

DRUUUUMMMMM ROOOLL! GREEN!

I don't know who or why someone came up with yellow containers but who ever it was they forgot to tell the man at the top. I asked them about it and they have no ideal!.
