Yeah and now thugs have Glocks with a "switch" which basically makes them a full auto firearm. Can you imagine shooting a 17 or 30 round mag at full auto through a handgun? Who knows where half of the rounds will go. If you watch a video of them shooting a 30 round mag through one of those it takes like 2-3 seconds at most. Scary!!

Spray and Pray…
Well on the good side the firearm is empty then and it will take time to change the magazine and they have most likely missed everyone they were shooting at.

For discussion purposes, .30-06 bolt action rifle, .357 revolver and semi auto 12 ga.

I am asking solely regarding home defense rounds. Not for target or practice. How many should I make sure I have on hand in reserve. In this day and age?

One night several years ago three thugs shot and killed a man as he answered the door. Then they entered the house to loot it. The daughter retreated to a back room and hid with her baby and the wife fought back with several weapons the owner had stored in the main bedroom. As a deputy who helped investigate said, "it looked like a war zone, couldn't step anywhere in the bedroom without stepping on empty shell casings". The wife emptied every weapon she could get her hands on without taking the time to reload. And there were several weapons. Apparently nobody involved in the fight had any marksmanship training whatsoever. They just pulled the trigger to make noise. I remember that the lady was shot in the leg but I can't remember if any of the thugs were hit. I do remember that the thugs were caught and are now in prison.

I have several reloads available for each home defense weapon I own. If I am ever involved in a home defense event I hope I have enough sense and calmness to think about what is behind my target every time I pull the trigger.

I believe thinking about the background will take a back seat to thinking about what is behind your back (all the family hopefully). I would be chaotic in my house with 5 LGDs getting involved, love my dogs but they rank below my family.

A situation we all hope never happens. Yet the dogs are part of your defense line... just as you are.

100%, even little barking cat is handy. If she barks all the big guys will go to DefCon 1.

This has come up for discussion here many times in the past. What would you do if home invaders broke into your house while you were there.

First, if I am here alone and they break in the front door I am running out the back as quickly as possible. Ain't nothing here worth dying for or killing somebody else for. If my wife is here I will stand my ground until she can escape, then I will be right on her heels escaping myself. We have nothing in this house that cannot be replaced.

BUT, if my daughters or any of my grands are here I will meet the attackers as aggressively as possible, using every available weapon, fighting as hard as I can to give them time to escape. THEY cannot be replaced.

I'm glad that you feel that is an appropriate defense for you and yours, mine is a tad bit different once someone enters my home their ass is mine and the condition and manner in which it leaves will be at my discretion.
As I will not be threatened in my home or forced to leave it, to the benefit of an attacker.

I understand what you’re saying, and no “thing” is worth dying for. I’d just recommend the plan be flexible. If a home invader enters knowing someone is inside it could be hard to leave and/or impossible. Running to the back door may be the plan for you…and them.

I understand both thought for dealing with home invaders. I have mine but lot can and does impact decisions made. Let just say my house always has 3 to 6 dogs inside and is never locked. Even when I walk the inside dogs a couple remain.
If I do have to leave the house first stop is to release the not so nice ones at the barn and snatch one of the backups. Only 1 way on and off my property in a vehicle.....

As I said before, it's a choice most of us hope that we never have to make. Either way your life is going to be changed, and not for the better.
