Red Wing Boots

Red Horse,

I learned something today. I never knew Red Wings had the three options. The store where I purchased my last pair never mentioned that. I always try to buy American.

I buy Thorogood brand boots. Made in USA cost hundred and $50 a pair best boots I've ever owned on my third pair. Poe n sons in portage Indiana sells them always has large selection of sizes in stock. I'm sure they would ship if you can't find any close to you.

I have one pair of Alden "Indy" boots that I have had for over 17 years now. I have had them rehealed, resoled, and restitched several times with no sign of them wearing out anytime soon.

I can truly sympathize with those who are disappointed with the footwear being sold in the states today. I was fortunate as a kid that my dad knew the value of excellent footwear. At the time I wore RedWings, Tony, Justin, Dan Post, and Florshiem. No gypo discount stuff for me. I pleaded with him to get a pair of trendy at the time Tom Mcanns, and they went to the dump soon thereafter. Junk. As I grew older and worked harder, I found the Redwings didn't hold a candle to West Coasts. I wore them for quite a while and then found the original Buffalo Boot company, and got a much better off-the-rack fit. I started having my boots custom made, and yeah man, if you don't know the difference between a boot made for you and not fifteen million other yahoos, well more power to you.

Buffalo, Currin-Greene went out of business in the seventies or eighties I guess. West Coast boots off the rack are well made and rebuildable. Some guys don't give a hoot and would rather wear throwaway imports. For Thirty years I have worn handmade custom fit lace up boots by John Newbury of Portland, now deceased, Nicks of Washington and Oregon, and Vibergs from Canada. If you get measured by them or one of their regional representatives, that is the way to go. They take about ten measurements of your foot and ankle and calf. Today's money USA you're looking at around four bills. For me, with logging, firefighting, trucking, farming and dancing around, you might as well have the best. You only get one set of feet so you might as well take care of them. No foot, no horse. The only bad experience I had with handmades was with Whites, one of the premier bootmakers. Three times I sent custom boots back to them and finally said I'm going to Nicks. Whites just got to be TOO BIG of a manufacturer in the time I have been around. The off the rack quality is fine, but for ordering a custom boot, I think their quality control has gotten poor. JMHO. "walk onnnnn"

The Red Wings I have are all USA made. The last pair was about 5 years ago. At that time the loggers were starting to be made in China. Wonderful isn't it??

Just checked, the 1210, which is my favorite boot is still all Made in USA, guess I better buy another pair soon, just in case.

Just looked at the Wesco Groundout boot, really nice looking boot, $450 though, yikes, maybe a Christmas present for myself.

Never had a bad experience at the Red Wing store in Wichita. They have my boot purchases stored on their computer so all I have to do is call a week ahead (they don't stock my size) and my boots are waiting for me when I get there. I wear 2244's in winter and 2280's in summer. Same boot just one is insulated the other is not. Both are made in china. The boots have always been comfortable right out of the box with no break in period and last me longer than any other boots I have tried. I also like being able to buy the exact fit replacement insole for the boots, which unlike generic insoles I have to cut.

Great site huh? Too bad more manufacturers don't go to the trouble of being so specific.

Carhartt for example should learn some lessons from Red Wing! Same here on the buy American. No problem with buying Euro stuff because they compete on even footing with us (Freud saw blades- Germany, Switz., CMT router bits-Italy etc). Its the Third world or China stuff that gets me going.

Carhartt does make some things in USA, you have to search em out though
