Reference Book Suggestions

Hey all. I'm interested in reading up and learning more about the "how to's" and proper designs for civil type work. So projects such as road and ditch drainage, swale cutting, dry well and french drain installation and the like. Basically looking for a good reading/reference book on civil work, if anyone can suggest a worthwhile title, or where to find something. I've looked on Amazon, but theres much to sift through, a was hoping a first hand suggestion would help with my search. Appreciate any suggestions/recommendations.

I can't suggest an actual book, but if you contact an engineering college specializing in civil engineering, you might get a lead on an instructor who can recommend some good text books.

I've found lots of good manuals on the websites of government agencies. USDA, EPA, Forest Service, etc. If you buy a book off Amazon, and it seems cheap, it's probably a printout of one of those PDFs.

Strangely enough, sometimes I find the 80-year-old editions on Google Books to be more useful than the latest editions.
