Renting post hole diggers?

I rented a Bush Hog model 2102 from a local tractor dealer when I built my pole barn. It came with 18" auger, I had 14" concrete "pucks" for the poles to set on. Worked well. $125 for the weenkend.

Our local rental places have them, but my experience with them isn't great. The ground here in the mountains is very rocky, and one rental had the cutting edge bent so much from hitting rocks that it didn't want to dig. The other hadn't been used in ages, and the PTO shaft was stuck so tight with old grease that it took me 20 minutes to free it so I could hook it up. Once that was done it worked great. Still, for 3 or 4 holes, it's a lot easier to do by hand than get the rental.

For not that much more, rent a skidsteer with a PHD on the front. You have the ability to go forward or in reverse, and push down. Plus, positioning a skidsteer is a lot easier.

A buddy down the street lent me his two man PHD with his muscle for assistance. Got my two holes dug with him in no time.

I've bush-hogged his field before a couple of times so it will work out in the end.
