I would try it. Loosen at least one-end so as to not build-up any pressure, which will keep blowing your solder back in your face.
You may have to clean it several times before the solder starts to 'tin' as you burn off the oil inside.
Use a power wire-brush or a fine file or sandpaper...not just a tooth-brush.
It will need to be virgin steel...and the little grain you make will help the bond
