Replacement engine oil

I'm going against the book specs of 5w30 and running a 10w30 it's an oldie.. a 2000 ( gasser of course.. 5.3 )...the engine has 185K on it and does use oil.. but then.. it's used oil since new.. and gm said that uisng a quart or 2 between changes was book spec too..

this is it's first change with syn.. I want to see how it does on it...

one thing I do notice immediatly, was that it used to have a bit of what i used to think was a valve rattle.. but have heard from other owners that it actually isn't a valve rattle. in any case.. in years past, I've added MMo to the oil, and the sound went away ( it's not spark knock form lo octane fuel either.. ).

witht he full syn oil this change.. no ni=oise.. so that in itself is a plus.. and by the time you buy a quart of MMO.. the price of the full syn oil change just dropped down to being within 6-8$ of the regualr oil change plus MMO.

I also swapped back to using oem GM filters this change too.. just for the heck of it..had been using a texaco I think

I' ve never seen or even heard of Shaeffer oil in the Ark/La/Tex area. It must be only locally distributed. Where would one look to find this if he were interested in purchasing. Mostly all we get is Shell, Chevron, Exxon-Mobil products or if in Walmart you also get their generic brand who I have no idea who supplies, maybe Murphy Oil same as gasoline supplier but then again, I dont know where Murphy Oil is from either. Come to think of it, never seen Amsoil either although I see a lot written about it and have read about the inventor.

Its not very popular around here.. Im like you, I think it might be a regional thing. Same with Amsoil, but its not readily available in stores, its kinda pyramid shaped marketing..
Personally, i use Mobil in all the diesels around my house( its free) and Valvoline in all the gassers... I do not use synthetics in anything unless it came with synthetic as a factory fill... (ie, the hystat drive on my Toro zero turn, the differental in the Dodge P/U)

Thanks Chris. I have wondered if running 5w40 in my 04 5.3L would be bad or good? Always have extra 5w40 left over from the fall oil change, and was curious if it would hurt or not?

5w40 sound slike a syn oil.

does it carry an s rating?

are you using oil? badly?

the 5w is good.. it will be an easy startup.

if in a hot hard environment like a south or southwest state.. the 40 likely won't hurt.

if it's an oil drinker.. deffinately may help.

I'm no oil engineer.. just what I've seen with tractors and other vehicles.

all my old tractors were likely built around using 20w straight in winter and 30w straight in summer.. or 10/arctic / 40 / desert.. etc. and i run 15w40 in them.. etc...

5w40 is a full synthetic diesel spec oil that comes in two forums. Either automotive diesel (TDi jetta's and the like) or heavy duty diesel.

Some brands can be compatible with gasoline engines, but not really 'recommended' for them. However, it wouldn't hurt either - besides an expensive oil change.

I run it in my truck, but again - my truck is a 6.4L twin turbo, that's now highly tuned.

If it carries an 'S' rating.. it should be ok for a gas engine....

"Usually" with a oil burner synthetic makes it worse, I have found the same to be true with a leaker also. BUT every engine is different, just like people some are crankier than others!!! Be curious to see what your experience is. CJ

NOACK volatility determines the evaporative loss of engine oils. This test is important because the operating temperatures of an engine will typically drive off the lighter ends of a lubricant while in service. This effectively results in pushing the viscosity of the lubricant to a more viscous level (up) and, as a result, fuel economy goes down due to an increase in parasitic load.

The evaporation loss is of particular importance in engine lubrication. Where high temperatures occur, portions of an oil can evaporate. Evaporation may contribute to oil consumption in an engine and can lead to a change in the properties of an oil.

that's the kind of answer i expected.

i have antiques that don't evaporate oil like that gm does..

heck.. I don't have ANYTHING that evaporates oil like that gm does. NONE of my gas or diesel engines consume more than 1/3 their sump fill during a short run term oil change, like 3000m../equivalent etc..

Go with an oil rated for pre 2007 diesels.

Yea, IMHO it is not NORMAL to have to add oil between changes in anything unless the engine is operated in severe service. My 7.3l PS will not use but maybe a quart in 5K miles UNLESS I am plowing then it will use about 2 to 3 quarts. I attribute that to no turbo boost not sealing the rings when plowing. On all my GM's I had only 1 oil burner that was bad and it was a 98 5.7L in a 3/4 ton. Very very loose engine. CJ

My 475 Cat in the big truck (almost 625000 miles) only uses about a 1/2 a gallon in 30000 miles.
The 4 Litre in my Jeep with 177000 miles on it never uses any oil between the twice a year oil changes. I run 10W30 year round.
I think that there is something wrong with that GM.

I think it's wrong.. however gm says it's book spec for that one.. did it since day one. I know MANY people that report the same thirst on those engines...

Mine never used a drop until it hit 250,000kms, now it uses a little. It is an 04 5.3L
