The disks range from 17 1/4 to 15 1/8, there is 28 of them. if I was to replace them with heavier 4.5mm 16" disk, beside loosing 2 inches of depth does anyone see something I am missing. I disked the plots 2 times this past season, and see no need to go deeper than 4 to 5". looking for your thoughts, thanks

Even if your disks started out as 18" I think you'll only lose 1" of depth if you go with 16". The diameter/radius thing. :)
It may well be that the added weight of the thicker disks will make up for it, anyway.

Like willflick said you will only loose one inch. as long as you change out all of them you will be fine.
