the great Cree LED lamps i put in the house 2 years ago....put in 8, 2 have burnt out. 50,000 hours my butt. I have incandescent in-place for 10 years that are still operational. As an electrical contractor i have been fixing so many LED light fixtures that ive lost count. the manufacturers will replace the lamp at no cost...during warranty... but im stuck for the labor under the warranty period and no one pays for that. and mind you, most of these are 40 feet in the air. at one 2 year old grocery store, i reciently noted that nearly a fourth of the fixtures were at least partially burnt out during a walk thru of parking lot. these units had a square of 4 LED emitters and nearly every post had at least 1 of them not working. 2 YEARS OLD. the manufacturer still advertises 10-20 year life spans.

Thanks for that. In a way I feel vindicated concerning my skeptisism (sp?) concerning the lifespan of LED lighting. Don't you make the customer pay for your labor? At least at cost?

I've replaced a couple of sodium bulbs with led bulbs. Just jumper across the ballast so full voltage goes to the bulb. Cheaper and easier than replacing the whole fixture, if it's still in good condition.

I missed that post. I would have to ask. I don't care much about LED lighting and such. I would have four questions to anyone claiming such an eco-friendly habitat. How do you heat, how do you heat your domestic hot water, how do you cook and how do you dry your clothes? And I guess, the age, *** and number of inhabitants is kind of telling too.

The house is heated and cooled with minisplits (electric air sourced heat pumps), Hot water is a electric heat pump water heater, electric oven, natural gas stove top, electric clothes dryer. Just my wife and I full time, kids and guests on weekends, 2600 sq ft ranch house. air sealed, R19 walls, R40 attic, we also keep a 12,000 gallon inground pool heated to 90 degrees (yes the wife likes it warm) and run the variable speed pool filter. We have a sealed combustion natural gas boiler for backup, but even at -12F last year we kept the house at 72F with only the minisplits. The minisplits have a COP (Coefficient of Performance of 4 at 47F meaning that for every kWh of electric we get the equivalent of 4 kWh (in BTU's out) the rest is 'pumped' out of the air. The COP drops with lower exterior temperature. I am a RESNET HERS Rater who rates homes and can certify an Energy Star home so the HERS rating of -13 is registered with the DOE. It is also verified over several years by utility bill data. it depends. Some that were installed by me i have to eat cost. Others pay but its usually alot of effort because they believe they are under warranty for labor also. In the ladt few years i have not installed led lighting anymore outside on poles. I do install it indoors, but im still skeptical. When wr drove home from thanksgiving dinner last night, i just happened to notice that 2 of the new freeway pole lights that were installed last year are burnt out. Again, 50,000 hours my butt.
