Anyone here done that before? I have a koyker backhoe that I'd like to flip the bucket on -OR- get shorter clamp on forks
to
help me get under the root ball with a backhoe because i don't yet have a FEL.. seems like forks on a bh bucket could be very useful in transplanting trees rather than FEL forks.. been searching and searching for alternative style buckets and found a ripper.. but still nothing.. any ideas out there?

I seem to recall someone doing that. One important note, the bucket cylinder has more power curling in the normal direction than it will uncurling. This may be important with the bucket on backwards and diging that way. This has to do with which side the rod is on giving the fluid less surface area to push against.

Very true, but then if that power was needed one could always reverse the bucket cylinder as part of the conversion.

How would you do that?

Good point.

Just rotate the cylinder 180 degrees so the rod is towards the backhoe rather than away from it. You will need to extend the two hydraulic lines, certainly the one closest to the backhoe which is now going to be closest to the bucket. The other one should be in a similar location andyou may be able to adjust the existing line.

If this idea catches on, there may come a day when a big selling point on backhoes is a reversable arm and bucket.

'face mode'

btw- i just started welding. where do you guys go to get your metal from i.e to make buckets/attachments?

If you reverse the cylinder, it will still curl when the cylinder is retracted. Doesn't matter which way the cylinder faces.

exactly what i was thinking about the tilt rotator, but one could get dizzy and end up like this guy

Orientation does not affect how much force the cylinder develops when retracting or when extending.

What difference would that make? The cylinder action is still the same.

... = Why I asked. I couldnt see any easy way to uncurl the bucket with cyl extension. Thot I must be missing the point somewhere. :confused3:

It looks like you are correct. Piloon suggested that and I had not given it enough thought. To get the stronger cylinder direction while digging with the bucket backwards would take a lot more than flipping the cylinder around. You'd have to get the cylinder on the bucket side of the dipper or something which is not practical.
