Road being used as makeshift dump

We don't have a recycling program in my rural county but I do save all the coke cans we accumulate every week and bag them separately putting them beside the garbage cart for the garbage man personally. It helps with the service he gives like the days when I forget to put the cart out and there is never any left on the ground.

We collect alum cans to sell to recylers.

We have twice a week garbage pickup for about $6 a week (mandatory on your water bill) and they are planning on adding recycling pickup again that has been halted since Katrina.

With recycling pickup, they ask you to rinse out the aluminum cans first before you put them in the recycling container instead of putting them in your garbage can and then they charge you an additional $6 amonth for this "service". Then they had the nerve to pass a law to make it illegal for people to come take these cans that you have to pay them to take.

Most people simply throw their cans in the garbage but still have to pay the recycling fees also.

This morning I read your thread in the safety forum.
Every time a car wrecks in your ditch out front just throw a bag of garbage in the back seat before they haul it away. You would never have to worry about trash pick-up again.

I grew up in Michigan and can remember when they started the can and bottle return. It was great to be a teenager in a German household, always plenty of beer bottles to return to the store. Dad used to let us take them back for gas money. I think some others have thought of the out of state return gimmick. I've heard its a problem in some southern Michigan locations. It would be fun to see how long it would take to fill up the trailer though.

As for "the more I drink" principle, mine would end "the fatter I get". I've been reduced to drinking Miller "64". Its pretty sad

So I placed that call and spoke to the roadmaster last week. He said he was going to come out the next day and look at the items dumped along the roadside. The items are still there and I have not heard back from him. I intend to call back tomorrow.

When we first spoke he did tell me that anything 25' from the center of the road is the responsibility of the land owner. The land is State Game lands. (Which might explain why the idiots figured it was OK to dump the tires & shingles there...no one lives here, may as well dump it!) Let's assume these tires and shingles are indeed on game lands property. Should I call them next?

I fully understand the viewpoints of both the township and Game Commission. It's not their responsibility to clean up after idiots but they are indeed my neighbors, whether they actually live there or not. No one likes to live a road that doubles as a town dump.

When you say 25' from the center of the road, do you mean within that 25', or outside of that 25'. Outside of that 25' would make sense, inside of it would kind of tick you off. Cripe, they'd have you fixing potholes next.

I think I would call the Game Land people and atleast see what they have to say. Are they part of the State Parks Department? If they are they would certainly have the equipment to haul the tires off.

I think your calls will get results, but those results will try your patience and not happen quickly. The only quick cleanup comes when someone is afraid of being fined or losing a contract. Government agencies work slow because they have immunity from such fears. For an example, our garbage service picked up a large quantity of old motor oil someone put into the trash. They noticed the oil trail as they stopped in front of my house. Oil had been dripping out of the truck for more than a mile and it started pouring and puddling right in front of my driveway. They stopped the truck and called out their cleanup crew. The crew responded immediately and spent 1/2 a day cleaning up the road in front of my house and the whole oil trail leading up to my house. They are a private company and cannot afford to be fined by the EPA and the county.

I called back the Townshiip today and asked to speak with the roadmaster. He was not available but I was informed that he brought it up at the last Supervisor's meeting and was told that I needed to call the Game commission or the State Police.

I then called the GC and they are passing the word along to this district's "Land manager." Probably more like "passing the buck" more than passing the word.

Jin...they told me anything outside of 25' from the center of the road is the landowner's responsibility. I probably did not explain that very well initially.

The saga continues...I'm one step closer to calling the local TV station.
