From the photo it looks like the longest span of your new beam is held by a single joist hanger. When you add ceiling joists, ceiling finish, rafters, sheathing and roofing material it is more than I would want to trust a light weight hanger to hold.

MarkV

I forgot to mention that I'm going to add additional support there according to your previous suggestion, Mark. I had already planned some angle supports at each post. I'll add a verticle component to those angled supports where the beams meet with the walls of the roof.

I guess I'm not ALL ready for the rafters, etc. yet.

Hey now it's starting to look like something! Those walk boards are going to come in real handy when setting the rafters.

I'd like some opinions on outdoor lighting. I have that overhang area off the north of the shop, and I'd like to have some good lighting in there. Does anyone have an outdoor covered area like this? What would you use for lighting?

By the way, I haven't made any direct progress on the shop. I've spent some time cleaning out the garage so I can set up to cut rafters in there. That's the problem with building a shop... I need a shop to work in when I'm building my shop.

Have you priced priced engineered custom built rafters? I know you have been using used lumber, but when I built my building (42' clear span), I couldn't hardly buy the lumber for as cheap as I got the rafters built and delivered.

Those guys have a big jig they build the rafters in, and will do all the engineering calcs - span, snow load, ceiling weight, etc.

I already had the 2X10's that I'm using for the rafters before I even started construction. That's one of the reasons that I'm going with so wide of an overhang... The 2X10's are 10' long.

On another note, I've made some picture worthy progress. I cut out the braces that I'm going to put on the north wall off the shop to hold up the beams for the overhang roof. The first picture is the pieces cut out, and the second picture shows how the assembly will go together.

I figured you already had the material for the rafters. Don't skimp on the gussets (both sides), use plenty of quality construction adhesive and screw the dickens out of it.

My brother built a barn in the early 70's. I was barely a teen and helped him set the rafters (he was my legal guardian - so it was more like slave labor, but that's a whole other thread). He skimped on the number of rafters, lumber size, the gussets were maybe 6"x6", used white glue and roofing nails. Lucky they didn't collapse on us when we installed them - too flimsy!

Ten years later it collapsed during a snow fall. The rafters failed. Since I didn't get along with my brother at that point in our lives, I might have laughed at his misfortune.

Looks like you are making progress!

I hear you. If I can just get the outside done before the first snow, I'll be okay. I can do electrical and finish work on the inside through the winter.

I spent another $60 on some screws and glue for these braces and a box of framing nails.
