Ruger or Glock

I carry Glock 26 9mm 10+1 at all times even at church. Our greeter at church conceal carries also and remains at front door during services. I sit on back row by door of the sanctuary for backup . Evil world today !

My sentiments exactly, Cat Driver. I have taken great interest in this thread, as I am an elder in my church. Thanks to all of you who are taking ongoing measures to be prepared.

We had a practice session for the church security team last night. Security team means a bunch of guys carrying concealed and just watching everything.

The guy leading the group retired from the military last year. Special Forces and has been training in the ME for a couple years.

Seriously, he had all us middle aged guys pointing fingers and screaming, "BANG, BANG," at the top of our lungs.

We rotated thru seven positions with one guy being the shooter. We stopped the shooter every time only loosing two or three every time. The drill was that the guy would be spotted pulling a pistol as he approached one of the doors.

Then the SF guy pretended to be the shooter. He killed all eight of us EVERY SINGLE TIME. Seriously, he bounced off the walls, was always moving, moved at a diagonal, and never moved straight toward anybody. He would be thru the foyer, up some steps and around a corner before we could get to cover or draw weapons. Then thru the hall and doors into the auditorium.

I think I may need more then six or seven rounds.

We don't expect an attack, but our area has had two school shootings in the past twenty years. A few weeks after the Texas church shooting we had probably a third of the attendee families packing weapons. We are just starting and the drills we are running is for somebody coming in one of the two front doors. We actually ran a drill tonight, Sunday, with about half of the church there. Then we had to go around and help the older ones off the floor because the two guards in the auditorium were screaming "get down" at the top of their lungs. One of the things the leader went over and over was to let the guards do what we have planned and for others to stay down and out of the way. It was emphasized that if we have thirty five people stand up and start shooting (in Kentucky we are nearly as bad as Texas) that more would probably be hit by friendly fire than the assailant.

As we develop different drills for different events we plan to fade away into the background with everybody forgetting we are there. We are still welcoming to visitors. And our little church has had people from all over the world and many different religions visit. The last were a couple who were of the Janes religion from India. They were made very welcome and the wife even attending a Homemakers Club meeting where she talked about herbal solutions to common problems. We have already discussed having extra security when we know there will be a foreign presence not because they are a threat but in case there is a threat to them.

And yes the problem we most dread is if the shooter is one of our own who, for some reason, goes nuts and starts shooting. Had that happen with one of ours but it was outside the church. He pointed a Berretta at a KSP officer and was killed.

More probable is a visitor who attends for a Sunday or three and builds up familiarity and trust, then attacks.

We know we cannot defend against every scenario but we are going to plan as best as a bunch of old men can. Better to have a plan and not need it than to need a plan and not have it.

Just so you understand. My entire world is sitting in one pew on Sunday morning. My wife, my daughters, and their families, including my four precious grandchildren. I WILL do what it takes to protect them in any way I can.

What I liked about this thread was that RSKY et.al approached this in a measured and thoughtful manner. It's not just a bunch of Rambos packing heat.

We have a safety team at church also. We have always had some that conceal carried, but in today's world, that can be a liability also, so formally set up team. They train and have 2 way radios. My wife and I have permits, but have not regularly carried, but we are in process of taking some classes and carrying. My wife just got a Sneaky Pete for her H&K, she likes it, will probably wear it without gun for a bit to get used to it. We also need to get a locking console so we can securely store gun in SUV when picking up grand daughter from school.

Just lock the vehicle.

Six seconds from start to finish with bad guy laying on floor dead. That is a pretty good response to evil I think.

Thank god the good guy with a gun was there and acted as he did. The numbers killed or injured old have been no doubt been much higher otherwise. Unfortunately I think we will continue to see more and more of these crazy, lone wolf types...Nothing ever really gets better in society, it's always circling the drain...sometimes slower.sometimes faster, but always spiraling down.

One of my biggest fears as a concealed carrier is accuracy needed and at what distance. In this instance the shooter was approx 25' from the CC but what if the distance is 100' and the scum bag needs to be stopped. What is an ideal distance where pinpoint accuracy is needed. There probably is no set answer, but was something that bothered me.

100 foot requires a lot of practice with a short concealable pistol especially. I didn't say "not doable" as we used to practice what are called Standards at 50 yards years ago. Shooting behind and around a barricade at a IPSC target. It is difficult. The smaller the pistol the more difficult it becomes. Actually shooting beyond 15 yards is very problematic for most. I used to shoot a lot of pistol at 100 yards. yes, 300 feet. But this kind of shooting was a take your time, really good sight picture type of thing with a 44 magnum. For fun we used to compete with water filled milk jugs at 50 yards with my Glock 19 9mm. You can get good at these things, but it doesn't come easy for most people. God knows what it would be like with an armed assailant shooting others or at you. I imagine it would be awful. Better hope the "muscle memory" kicks in and the only way to make that even remotely possible is thousands and thousands of rounds down range.
