running hyd off my 8n to run a log splitter

Better off to get rid of the old obsolete N Ford and purchase a real tractor . That has a drawbar, live high volume-high pressure hydraulics, SCV and live pto.

All 9N, 2N, and 8N tractor owners should buy a brand new $25000 or more tractor loader backhoe. Then dig a large hole and push the ford into it and fill the hole over. Obviously, those tractors are worthless.

Wait ... I think I've seen that the sometimes sell for a couple thousand dollars. Never mind, maybe they are useful after all.

(Sarcasm off)

The 8n is more of a "real" tractor than 99% of similar sized tractors today. Back then, not alot of things ran off of remotes or required high flow. But that dont make it obsolete or not a real tractor.

Merchanman87: welcome to the forum. You just have to learn to ignore some people on here. I do agree with others though that you would be best served with a PTO pump. With the 8n hydraulics, and a splitter with a 4x24 cylinder, it would take 27 seconds to extend and 20 to retract. And would barley make over 10 tons of force. And all of that is spec. Likely you have a pump that is showing its age. So it likely would be slower and less powerful.

The cost of the PTO pumps are high, not to mention putting excessive hours on an already old engine. Instead of the PTO pum and 3PH splitter, have you considered a stand alone unit with a small briggs or honda motor. $1000-$1500 buys a nice splitter these days.

A 8N will out pull the majority of small 4WD compact tractors:)

Think about a front mount pump (driven off of the crank shaft) like they used when adding a loader. Mount a tank, valve, and a two sets of remotes. You would still have your PTO and it would be a major upgrade for your ford.

And probably more money and slower when its all said and done than just buying a $1000 huskee/speeco from tractor supply.

This is the first kit I found Hokie-Hydraulics Put what ever pump on it that you need and think your tractor would pull. JJ what would the valve, tank and remotes cost? $1000. sounds like a lot for just the pump.

I think a PTO pump would be better than a crank driven pump becuase you could easily switch the splitter to another tractor.

JJ I'm talking about a 2 spool valve and two sets of disconnects so he would have a complete live system. I did forget the filter.
If he has to spend $1000 for just the pto pump I would go with the big Tractor Supply 37 ton splitter and forget the tractor. I have a 3pt and a stand alone and don't use the 3pt much any more.

Where would you mount the tank on an 8N?
