A drilled well seems the best way to go if you can afford the initial cost. Around here we have a major problem with iron. Our home is extremely old and we are still using the surface well that is over 200 years old. It is spring feed and during the summer months we have to manage our water usage to ensure we do not run the well dry. (this has happened in the past and causes major problems with sand in all of the lines. Several years ago I installed a UV lamp and filters to clean the water. We have our water tested yearly to make sure it is okay to drink. Since adding the filters and lamp the water has always past with flying colors. Another problem we have had in the past is poor management of road salt. I finally got the town to stop salt sanding our road which has eliminated the salt in the water potential.
We have a summer place in the mountains and use the same type of purification system for the water up there. Most people would say we don't need it up there because the water is so clean and very few people, problem is there are lots of animals and from time to time they die in or near the water sources.
The first picture shows the entire system with dual filters shutoff valves and also the out going set up with a place to add the air pump to blow out the lines in the fall. The UV system is the Sterilight Ultraviolet Disinfection system which has worked great for us. The first filter is a sediment element and the second is a carbon filter that removes and taste or smells in the water. We are careful about how much water we are drawing through the system as the filters are only rated for about 4 gallons per minute.
At the summer place I add one filter canister load of Clorox and then run all facets until I can smell the clorox. This helps with removal of bacteria that might be growing in the pipes. Once that is completed I add the filters and we are set to use the system.
The key issue is to have the water tested yearly!
Just my two cents...
