Sad Bluebonnets

I've posted other places that our bluebonnet crop this year was really sad. I'm posting a picture of Kathy and me in our best patch of bluebonnets. We are surely disappointed, but maybe next year we'll have a bumper crop.

On a side note, I brought in some bermuda grass sod last year from another part of our property. Guess what popped up in our yard? We have nice patches of showy primrose (buttercups) that I can't bring myself to mow down. I guess when one wildflower does poorly, another will have a good year.

That was the way is was on our property outside of Glen Rose. One year the bluebonnets would be great and the next year it would be the other wildflowers. What I miss are the wild redbud trees, need to plant some here on our property in Cooke County, along with more wildflowers.

I know you said bluebonnets and all my mind registered was the blue, but I'll post this anyway. I don't know if we even have bluebonnets up here but the bluebells were spectacular a few weeks ago...

Jim, your bluebonnets do look a bit thin, compared to what we've seen in the past. However, yours are about the biggest and best patch I've seen this year. As for the buttercups, I've never in my life seen as many as we have all along the roads here this year.

Rob, those bluebells seem to be carpeting the forest floor. We have a blue dayflower here that likes shady areas, but we don't have that variety of bluebells. Like "buttercup" in a name, there are many flowers called bluebells. We have a Texas Bluebell that grows along the edge of our ponds/tanks and is quite different from the ones you showed. Also, there is a Virginia Bluebell that has multiple blooms hanging from a single stem. My mother always called a little early flower that sprung up in our yard a bluebell, but I've learned it was really a grape hyacinth. It doesn't matter. They're all pretty and especially fun that I don't have to plant them. Yesterday, my wife and I took a tour of our property and found lots of wild yuccas and foxglove too. My garden from last year is solid with basket flowers. I'll take some pictures of it in a few weeks. Like Bird mentioned, the showy primrose type of buttercups are everywhere this year.

We have the same situation here. The Bluebonnets are patchy but we have showy primrose in abundance. It has almost all gone to seed so I will be able to start mowing in about a week with my new flail mower. The dewberries are patchy also not like some years we have had.
