It is heart wrenching when you have to bury them yourself,

And yet there is no one else I would trust to do it either. We had to take our basset hound in to be put down in 2003.
She wouldn't even eat a lump of raw hamburger that morning. My kids, wife, and I all went to the vet and were holding her when she went to sleep. Went home, dug a grave, cut up a couple boards for a cross. Then I left on a mission trip the next morning at 6 am. That was a tough one. My sympathies as well.

RaydaKub, I had to do basically the same thing you did only in a little diffrent order. My 12 year old geman shepard, Jenny, had hip dysplasia and had gotten so she couldnt get up to use the bathroom. I dug her grave on a sunday evening with the intention of having a good friend who is a vet tech come put her to sleep the next morning. Jenny laid under a pine tree and watched me dig and cry.One of the hardest things I've had to do.

The next morning when I went out to wait on my friend, Jenny had passed on her own during the night.

The older I get, the weepier I get. And you guys aren't making it any easier with these stories.

I know the pain. Our 13 year old chocolate lab had a stroke and couldn't get up and to be put down. That was over 10 years ago and we still get weepy when we talk about her.

We've got a little shelter dog, Sammie, that's almost 13 now. He's my little buddy and I can't stand the thought of losing him.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I noticed your post the first day if was up, and could not read it because I knew what it was about. Many people here have had the unconditional love a dog gives and than have had to face a dogs only fault. .. They will one day break your heart. All dogs are special some are just extra special.

Sorry to hear about your loss. My neighbor had to put down his horse not long ago, and he asked me if I would dig a grave for it. He had a friend of his come over and shoot it and then bury it for him. He couldn't stand to be anywhere near when the moment came (and neither could I). It was 5 feet deep, 3 feet wide, and about 8 feet long. If I recall it took about an hour or two.

I agree, My "Dusty", when he was buried, i was there, "but" I could not take it upon myself to cover his head. My Bud did this for me, and "I" continued afterwards.
Very depressing day it was.
