Trouble is that you can't use a full size 5 gallon bucket, it's too tall. I used a big ol' flower pot and then did my best to transfer the oil into the waste oil bucket.

Maybe we should dig a pit and then drive the tractor over the pit.

THing is you change the oil at 50 hours and then every 400 so not that often.

Try one of those nearly flat cement mix pans made out of plastic they probably would hold 15 gallons of so and can't be too expensive at Home Depot or local garden center.

But then what? You now have this huge kitty litter box full of 8 gallons of oil. You might be able to pick it up with help. Getting that kitty litter box to pour into a waste vessel will be tough and driving to the recycle place with the litter box full will be messy too.

I still think that we are better off stopping the drain midway with the plug. Change drain pans, and then finish the change.

Funny how we tractor guys are working on equipment with bigger maintenance requirements than cars but using our car tools and methods. We are bound to run into challenges like this. You know that the heavy equipment shops have a fancy way to drain the crankcases of D8 bulldozers without swapping out 5 gallon buckets a million times.

I had the same problem with mine a 40se also. You could see that the plug threads had been messed up from the factory. Probably the same guy who installs the oil filter with lubing the seal. It was a pain in the backside. I ended up taking the plate off that it attaches to and threading the plug in backwards to chase the threads. It worked, but I had hydro-trans on my driveway for awhile.

I have two drain plugs (manual tranny). So, I used two 3.5 gallon drain pans. But, it was still a problem: I was teaching my son how to change fluids (he had never done so before). So, gave him the drain pans, showed him where the drain plugs were, and gave him the wrench to remove them. At that moment, a contractor showed up at the house that I had to meet with. So, I left my son to do this himself. When I came back, he had this incredulous look on his face and there was oil everywhere. It turns out, I didn't explicitly tell him to remove the plugs from the drain pans. :D Just goes to show you: never assume anything. What a mess!

The next fall I had him help with the JD GT. First thing he said was: "don't forget to remove the plugs from the drain pan" I guess we both learned something from that experience.

I think this is smaller than the similar device I got from Northern Tools a couple of years ago. They don't have the one I bought for $99 anymore. This one is called the OTC 1577, has a 7.5 gallon capacity and can be had for $99 at Northern or about $65 via ntxtools.com. My version is big enough that I have done my 50hr oil plus HST and two other oil changes and have not filled it yet. I think this is somewhat smaller but still big enough to do a 50hr on a DK HST. What is also nice about these is that you can let the filter drain and also have a secure spot to leave the plugs. It also rolls.
