Forgot a steel /supplies source in the area (DC, Va., Balto.)
Posner Industries - steel, fasteners, tools, maryland, virginia

TLB - excellent list - thanks! I was planning of hitting 3 Mules and the Fastenal place in Hallowing Point. Also figured I'd cruise Industrial Park circle - figured they'd have something - I just generally avoid Waldorf like the plague, so don't get by there much.

Just want some square tubing (for now) and some expanded steel sheets

A lot of good sources listed, but trust me, welding shops, Posner, Fastenall are going to pay top dollar. Boulevard steel is not cheap either. Used to be a small truck load cost 50-60 bucks, now a few parts cost a 100 bucks...

I have not looked, but I'd like to find a recycle place that will sell steel for twice what they buy it for, and that would be a bargain to me.

If you get up to Carroll County stop by Petry's Junk Yard in Westminster. You will have a hard time finding a place that sells metal for less. Only problem is their a junk yard so availability is hit and miss, all the more reason to stock up. :)

Well, yes and no. Capitol welding probably stocks more steel than some other supply houses and they sell stock more as a courtesy service. Posner is kinda pricey but not nearly as much as Fastenal gets.

The larger distributors don't like dealing with homeowners or small 1 off projects.

Waldorf Metal off 488 last time I was in there does sell for cost x2, but they don't have steel stock. Mostly just aluminum. Ditto, for Clinton Metal. The big salvage operations in NE and SW DC use shredders and depleted down to the bones when steel was getting big money.

Saturday's scrap price was 0.50 per 100 so yards should start restocking soon.

I'm pretty familiar with that building. Know the erector crew on it very well. Wonder if they ever finished the trim?

Me too, stop light on every friggin' corner. 301 is a horrid mess lately.

I'd get it from capitol before fastenal (a little cheaper). there is a fab shop off of Sixes Rd., on the left, don't know what they might have

good luck, and tell me how you make out. I get steel from Boulevard Sales in Elkridge off of route 1. It is not cheap... but they have stock when you need it. Wayne

I stayed at the hotel next door to that place a couple of month's ago. I was standing outside the fence drooling at their inventory! It's a shame all the stuff they have outside.

I'm sure the TSA would have frowned on my hauling steel home in my suitcase!

They looked pretty well equipped.

Again good info - will let you know on Fastenal building - haven't been there just noticed the sign out front. I also know Gary somewhat - coached in same Little League for a while - so may just stop by there and Capitol first.

Figure I can suffer a little with the high prices initially since I am just starting - I just didn't feel like calling/visiting 20 places. As usual, get all the right answers right here! If I really get into it I can take a road trip and load up

Matt:

I was worried for you for a minute staying in a hotel near Boulevard sales.. That area is not a top tourist spot if you get my drift... But I know the hotel close by, it is a nice one. Just don't go out at night for a walk....

Thanks Wayne,

I'll remember that if / when I get back to the area.
