Is there any way to do a search and just get back a single response for each new subject or reply posted? I really only need one instance to see if it's a thread that would interest me or one that I have been following. This would obviously cut down the length of the report tremendously, especially for those times when I can't check in for a few days.

You could limit your search results to 1, but that wouldn't bring back a parent thread, but rather a matching post ... and it wouldn't bring the post up directly, but rather take you to the results page, on which you'd have to click to get to the post.
