Seat switch bypass

I think we all understand your point. You make sense, but there's no point in trying to scare us. Anyone who disables their seat switch obviously has taken it upon themselves to bypass a safety feature and is responsible for the consequences.

Personally, I need to stand up often while using my pallet forks. Otherwise, I can't see the tips. I got tired of the tractor shutting off while I did this, so I bypassed it.

Amen. Agree 100%. Those "safety switches" were put there by teams of lawyers performing the 3 letter version of butt covering exercises. BuickandDeere has not cited a single case of an injury due to lack of a seat-based "safety" switch. I doubt there are any. No one exists who is more safety conscious than I am since I often operate on steep ground. Seat interlocks serve little purpose other than to irritate the owners.

I used my tractor for about a year with that seat switch when I first got it, finally I had enough. At times, many times running the pto winch with the seat up, the log would fetch on something, shake the tractor at 1800 rpm, the seat come's down, tractor shuts off, get back on, disengage pto, start back up....I even use a bungee cord to hold the seat up for a while, but when logging, it's on and off, on and off......it got to be to much.

Fortunately Kubota design the L3400 with enough slack on the wire-ring harness under the seat to loop over that plastic toggle switch, easy fix. So now when the tractor tips over, all I have to do is reach under the seat and move the that wire harness off the switch, jump to safety and the tractor will shut off. Might be a good reason to make a better mouse trap.

Show us a case where there the absence of a working seat switch saved lives and prevented injury.

Okay, never mind. You're right, I was wrong. By all means continue spreading the word about the good job seat switches do. Keep it up. I think you're really getting somewhere here.;)

My full time business is industrial automation (factory floor machines) design, build and support. Over the last 30 years I have seen the importance of safety, interlocks and guards grow. There are 3 factors that drive this: incompetency and impatience and idiots.

When you find safeties on equipment, like seat switches and ROPS, it is because people have applied those 3 factors to previous generations of the equipment. Is getting the task done a little faster or easier really worth your arm, eye, head, life?

Power equipment can be unforgiving on soft and easily mangled human flesh. Seen too many people that claim to know better than the machine or quick enough to grab that part without getting hurt. Experience tells you it luck and odds and those run out at some point. Just go browse YouTube.

When asked about interlocks and guards I will explain about reasons they are there and that we all need to go home at end of day with ability to count to 10. In non-mixed company the number goes up to 21.

When you defeat or disable safeties on equipment ask which of the 3 factors is your driving force? Then look at the underlying issue and what solutions are available.

The only way the seat safety saves lives is if it is such a PITA you leave the tractor in the barn. I had almost forgotten how annoying they are until I used a buddies tractor. This tractor has a pretty crude safety which is a lever depressed by the seat. Putting a work glove under the seat effectively bypassed it.
