Also remember that on these small backhoe hydraulic systems, you can't really operate 2 controls at once so what you really end up doing is keep repeating a little of one control and a little of another and it appears to be smooth

Shh, don't tell my backhoe that, it seems to be quite happy working both at once....

Mike

Can you really operate any combination of 2 controls at once. I'm impressed. How does the power of the operation compare to when you are only operating one control. I can really tell the difference between my Woods 1050 with open hydraulics and my Hitachi excavator with closed hydraulic system.

I can on my MF 1475 BH. Some are slower than others. I always use two functions at once when doing flat bottoms.

Cliff -- First of all, that's a fine looking dog! Secondly, I am absolutely convinced backhoe work is the most fun you can have with your clothes on! I remember when mine was on order, I practiced the hand movements like Daniel-san: "Wax on, wax off!"

I practiced at low rpms and quickly overcame the jerkiness. Also got really good at stopping the swing of the boom before it hit the stops.

Good luck and have a blast! Pete

My Woods 9000 will operate multiple controls at the same time, do it all the time. Usually two at the same time, boom and dipper. Thats how you scrape a flat botom. If you want to taper up the end of a trench and pack it you need three controls, boom dipper and curl. Also when dumping dirt 2-3 controlls are used at the same time. I kind of make a half circle while dumping. This way your always moving and near the end of the dump your dropping in for the next scoop.

Power seems to be fine using multiple controls just slower.

The trick to not bouncing is finding the balance point on the valve. There is a small area of movement where you hear it hiss a little, thats it.

When first learning I'd have the tractor in 4WD, brakes on hard, bucket down and just take a little weight off the rears. Until your get the feel its easy to drag the tractor all over.

These days it stays in 2wd with the brake off half the time. When ready to move set the heal bucket in the hole. Then reach over and lift the bucket a tad. Lift the stabilzers an inch or so. Then lift the tractor tires up slightly with the boom and push with the dipper. Start out with the dipper straight up an down. You need a gentle touch to do this and a sub frame. Don't think I'd try this with a 3pt set up.

Andy - the 48 model will also let you work both controls at once. I have noticed some motions don't work at the same time - but when I pull back with both handles it's like stump pulling overdrive - that little beast will move some pretty incredible things with both arms pulling up and back. Seeing as your so close you'll just have to come by and try it sometime /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

Take Care,

Yep it is fine moving both controls at once too, only thing is don't try to LIFT boom and raise back as then the back on mine drops and the boom smashes shut! as the fluid will force it's way through from the boom lift to the boom elbo, and what a bang she whill make! lol... I can get swing and dump with boom out easy, but boom back and up is the bad things happen.

I usually run mine at PTO speed though as I like the greater power, speed is not an issue but getting a full swing Left/Right with a bucket full of dirt is as they have the cylinders on mine as single acting aginst each other to limit the force as too many people were bending the elbo/arm joint while in th trench and pushing the side to side action!...

Geeze, my original statement was obviously wrong. I also obviously operate at least two controls ar once. I just wasn't thinking straight. What I can't do is soperate the way I run my excavator which has a presurized hydraulic tank and 3 hydraulic pumps which have rods from the control levers to the pumps to regulate their flow to what is necessary. It also has hydraulicly assisted actuators on some of the valves to assist you in controlling them. Some of the controls also operate 2 valves, such that half way is low speed and then the rest of the way is high speed. The net result is that no matter what combination of levers you pull at once they always operate at whay seems like full strength. I must be having backhoe withdrawal, my TN has been in the shop all week. When I get it back Wed morning I hope, I'll have to try out control combinations to see how they really work--- geeze all those 1000's of hours and I never payed attention /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks, I'm also partial to the big Goldens as aparently you are as well (unless that's a photo of you, in which case you need a shave.)

And yes, the BH is great fun, though for now a kind of nervous fun.
