I have a 4000 4 cylinder diesel (1964) and I adjusted the bands, and changed the fluid. The tractor runs and shifts great, however after the band adjustment, it would hold on a hill in part. I have heard the procedure is different on different select o speed transmissions. I went by the manual, however I am not sure the manual matches my tractor... How different are the procedures?

Also, what is the normal operating temp of the transmission? After mowing a field, I can't hold my hand on the side. Guessing it's running about 135-150. This sound normal? Thanks guys

I see guys talk about direct drive and overdrive? I thought you have gears 1-10 and thats it. Can someone explain this?

One more thing, the 3 point works good, however when holding a load in the air, I notice the arms "bouncing" or "searching" slightly, like it drops an inch and goes right back up. It holds a selected position fine, just wondering if this is normal.

I can comment on the trans temp running a 6 foot brush cutter.

my 1967 3000 would reach about 185* on a 95* day after mowing for several hours.

This was not external trans case temperature but with a mechanical temp sender/ gauge measuring the internal oil temp. External case was much cooler.

Since the engine also ran about 185* engine heat transfer must have been some of the measured temp.

On the 3 point- does the load drop with the engine off? If so it may be a slow leak of the rockshaft piston seal.
Once the arms begin to drop while the engine is running the linkage will command lift to maintain the original position.

Yes the load does drop with the engine off.

Pre 1965 S-O-S transmissions do not have oil coolers. Yes, they do run hot.

Band adjustment procedures for the early over running clutch (ORC) transmissions are not the same as for the later (63-64) direct drive clutch (DDC) tractors. Your 64, 4000 (like mine) is a DDC model.

"Bouncing" of the lift arms while running is a symptom of internal leaks. It is time to R & R the lift cover, replace the cam follower pin and lift piston O-ring and readjust the draft and position control settings.

Should you need help, go to the antique tractor (YT) Ford forum. There are several "experts" there.

No external cooler.....temps are fine. Oil doesn't start breaking down till well past 200F.

The term is "hiccup" on the 3 pt. caused by O ring in lift cylinder (access is removing the top cover to the hyd sump....the seat sits on it) leaking caused by worn O ring or galled cylinder. Your manual covers replacement and adjustment of such if needed once finished with the repair.

You aren't clear on what it does or doesn't do on a hill.....restate the problem.
