but that's what the two step verification process protects us no?. (they failed to confirm with the local Bank it was legit.)

- Get a copy (pic) before the deal is done
- call the issuing bank (if local / never off-shore bank) with the amount and the serial number, and they check their records and can confirm whether it was actually issued by them and gaurunteed VS risk it was printed off someones printer.

Yes there are tonnes of scammers but my point is an American Bank issued Cashiers cheque is drawn on bank funds and guaranteed by bank AND if you confirm before trusting / selling / shipping with the Bank that they actually issued the instrument (not printed up in someones basement cause if was Bank would't confirm) then all should be fine??

anyways I'm out. I got no horse in this race. And for sure lots of scammers and be wary for sure. Better safe than sorry can be good strate4gy.

Language is only one sign. In Canada almost 30% of all people who live here were not BORN in Canada meaning language is often different than say my Polish (European) background.

Cheers!!
you would think that this is true, but it is not, best advice i can give on this subject is "do not engage", there are several angles that they can try to pull on you.

I just put a motorcycle up for sale. The first text in response was from an area code 3,000 miles away saying he was buying the bike as a present for his nephew who lives in my area, then asked all the usual dopey questions followed by "What is the lowest price you will take?".

I responded by increasing my asking price my a factor of 10 and added I would also require him to clean my toilets for the next 2 years. The response I immediately got was; "That sounds fine, I will send you a cashier's check if you send me your address." :)

Nope, they print very good looking checks. Your bank takes it, give you cash or deposit money in to your account.
Then they mail this check to the issuing institution, they see it is a fake check, send it back to your bank, your bank takes the money fr9m your account. Meanwhile you already shipped goods to this scum artist.
Just make a quick search, 1000s of stories.

If I say in the ad that the price is firm, and they want lower, I go to the other direction and say its now more expensive. Its so funny to hear people say, "you can't do that!" Oh.. Yes I can. :)

Sad that there are people who do this for a "living" ... As mentioned above, some of them produce checks that actually do CLEAR the bank. But they finally bounce on the back end and you get charged back.

I've been listing a lot of stuff on CL and others trying to clear out some excess. I usually get a number of scam fishing texts / emails on the first day that it's listed. Often they're in another time zone. Usually their proposals and explanations make no sense. Don't get sucked in by your desire for a quick sale. Best to just ignore them or block them.

What would happen if u took the check (fake) and never did anything with it..
U both know it’s fake.. would the buyer try to recoup his “losses”.??

I've done that a few times and some of the checks looked like they were printed on paper grocery bags, while some looked reasonably good. None had all the correct routing numbers and they all came from Nigeria. Was kinda fun to get them. ;)

Like the contractor who told me I couldn't shut down "his" worksite.

My response was, I own the house and you're doing shoddy work. You're now fired, LEAVE.

He called me every name imaginable as he left. :)

I had a very similar situation years ago. I had purchased new audio setup for home theatre and listed my old one on craigslist. The story was a bit different as the lady was from Oklahoma and her son was away in the military. He wanted a theatre setup for when he came home. She offered to pay full price and basically all the same crap you mentioned. I responded with 2 statements. First I said when you search on craigslist its in your area and 2 I dont believe you. HA never heard from her again

The ONLY way I sell big ticket items is to meet the buyer at THEIR bank, I park right up front in view of the lobby, I have them withdraw cash and present it to me while we’re still in the bank and ask the front, courtesy clerk to please watch as I head to my vehicle.

I walked out one time with $27,500… I had the buyer contact his bank in advance to verify the cash was available… and waved to the smiling courtesy clerk as I drove away.

Paranoid? Probably… secure? Absolutely…

With asset forfeiture (Government theft in some cases) I would be concerned with transporting a large amount of cash. In States that enacted laws limiting or preventing the practice, many police departments are seizing the cash on behalf of the Federal Government and getting a percentage returned to them.

Secure until you get a block away.

I just posted my B2710 on Craigslist. Got the following response:

This scam has been around since the early 1990's. In fact, you could call this a classic scam.

Little known fact, cashiers checks can be cancelled. Yes, they really can. The only thing you can accept is cash or a postal money order. I don't even know if the US Post Office sells money orders anymore.

I played along. They sent a check, then took it to the sheriff’s office along with correspondence, they gave it to the postmaster for postal fraud!

I really appreciate your response.
The first email was addressed to my cousin, who assisted me in contacting the seller because I'm new to Craigslist.
I've been working incredibly long weeks so I won't be able to meet with you before buying, but I'm fine with the price and condition as they are listed on Craigslist. I'll go ahead and issue you a Cashier's Check, and when you have the money and it clears, I'll make plans for pickup.
Please respond as soon as possible with the information provided.
Full name
address, city state and zip code
Your mobile number:
Last price:
As soon as this is given, payment will be delivered overnight to you via UPS Next Day Delivery, and I will give you the package's tracking number.
Please remove the ad from Craigslist or label it as sold today. I will also add an extra $70 to deter other purchasers until you receive my check.
Thank you, and while we wait for your response, I hope we treat this with good faith. "

Not sure this is a "good faith offer." I responded that I would not sell untill the buyer inspected the tractor and I inspected the buyer. BTW the deposit-to-hold I listed in the add was $100. I priced the tractor, 2004 with 1040 hours, new rear tires and rear hydraulics at $9000 - I think that's a fair price. I'm pretty scam alert - what's others' opinions?

MF
Make sure you report them to Craigslist to get them blocked.

My reply would be bring cash money when you come to pick it up. That is if it does not sell in the meantime.
This is the ONLY way to sell on Craigslist, IMHO.

He you guys. Don’t get caught in any thing that looks SOOO. beautiful👹👹👹👹SCAM. They jyst want 70$ or any small amount of money. They use fake inviice from FEDEX OR OTHER bank or companies….Too good to be true!!!! RUN . I almost get caught also!

Absolute scam. My bil inherited about 30 guns from his uncle. Bil not a gun person. I sold them on a gun site and received several offers with the check scheme. Also someone would come by and pick up the merchandise. Also received fake copies of FFLs to send the gun to.

As far as purchasing things….like a tractor, if the price sounds too good to be true it isn’t true…especially if it comes with a story such as my husband died and I’m selling to get rid of it. I found many of those types on Craig’s list.
