Seller Beware

The ONLY way I sell big ticket items is to meet the buyer at THEIR bank, I park right up front in view of the lobby, I have them withdraw cash and present it to me while we’re still in the bank and ask the front, courtesy clerk to please watch as I head to my vehicle.

I walked out one time with $27,500… I had the buyer contact his bank in advance to verify the cash was available… and waved to the smiling courtesy clerk as I drove away.

Paranoid? Probably… secure? Absolutely…

With asset forfeiture (Government theft in some cases) I would be concerned with transporting a large amount of cash. In States that enacted laws limiting or preventing the practice, many police departments are seizing the cash on behalf of the Federal Government and getting a percentage returned to them.

Secure until you get a block away.

I just posted my B2710 on Craigslist. Got the following response:

This scam has been around since the early 1990's. In fact, you could call this a classic scam.

Little known fact, cashiers checks can be cancelled. Yes, they really can. The only thing you can accept is cash or a postal money order. I don't even know if the US Post Office sells money orders anymore.

I played along. They sent a check, then took it to the sheriff’s office along with correspondence, they gave it to the postmaster for postal fraud!

I really appreciate your response.
The first email was addressed to my cousin, who assisted me in contacting the seller because I'm new to Craigslist.
I've been working incredibly long weeks so I won't be able to meet with you before buying, but I'm fine with the price and condition as they are listed on Craigslist. I'll go ahead and issue you a Cashier's Check, and when you have the money and it clears, I'll make plans for pickup.
Please respond as soon as possible with the information provided.
Full name
address, city state and zip code
Your mobile number:
Last price:
As soon as this is given, payment will be delivered overnight to you via UPS Next Day Delivery, and I will give you the package's tracking number.
Please remove the ad from Craigslist or label it as sold today. I will also add an extra $70 to deter other purchasers until you receive my check.
Thank you, and while we wait for your response, I hope we treat this with good faith. "

Not sure this is a "good faith offer." I responded that I would not sell untill the buyer inspected the tractor and I inspected the buyer. BTW the deposit-to-hold I listed in the add was $100. I priced the tractor, 2004 with 1040 hours, new rear tires and rear hydraulics at $9000 - I think that's a fair price. I'm pretty scam alert - what's others' opinions?

MF
Make sure you report them to Craigslist to get them blocked.

My reply would be bring cash money when you come to pick it up. That is if it does not sell in the meantime.
This is the ONLY way to sell on Craigslist, IMHO.

Absolute scam. My bil inherited about 30 guns from his uncle. Bil not a gun person. I sold them on a gun site and received several offers with the check scheme. Also someone would come by and pick up the merchandise. Also received fake copies of FFLs to send the gun to.

As far as purchasing things….like a tractor, if the price sounds too good to be true it isn’t true…especially if it comes with a story such as my husband died and I’m selling to get rid of it. I found many of those types on Craig’s list.
