We had people who did not check their tire pressures....ever!

We had a series of vehicle rollovers that were attributed to low tire pressures because people were too busy or didn't know how.

So the only way to protect those who know better from those who don't care or know better was to require TPMS. Now if we would stop calling 'accidents' accidents and laying blame or responsibility where it belongs the world might be different. But we have a 'no fault/no blame' society more or less these days.

Well said! I can't count the times I've seen people driving with tires so flat it's hard to imagine they didn't notice. Then again, I've been passed by an idiot doing over 95mph with a 45mph donut tire mounted....no clue at all, none!

How does legislation requiring TPMS insure properly inflated tires and therefore prevent the few accidents caused by under inflated tires?

Does my 77' ford have that, never given me any trouble. LOL!!!

I think it would be hard to prove, but most people driving with low tires probably aren't aware of it. The light tells them about it, and many/most will probably get it corrected. I'm a car guy, pay attention to my tires, etc, and I've picked up a screw in a tire while driving, and had the TPMS alert me that the pressure had dropped. I didn't find out after the sidewall had been damaged, or I had control problems, so I thought that was pretty helpful. I also have a work vehicle that seems like a magnet for nails, and screws....I don't do a pressure check every morning, but 7, yes 7, times in the past year I've had the TPMS alert me to a problem that you couldn't notice visually. Sometimes I could kick the tires and figure out which one was low, but not always. Each time, there was a nail, screw, or even once a pinhole with no obvious cause.

Seems the government has studied this, and ound that cars with TPMS are more likely to have properly inflated tires....generally, a good thing.

As a matter of fact, it does! It's located between your ears, and has been the most efficient one ever built. It's actually a multi use system that serves many purposes. We all have one, but unfortunately it gets used less and less as the years go by.

Just GM products, no one else has been that foolish yet. :stirthepot:

Well, there you have it. I wouldn't buy a GM product right now anyway. I stopped buying GM back in 2005 when I got my F250 CC PSD 4x4. I used to be a diehard GM guy. But no more. My mom has a 2008 Chevy Malibu that has had and still has problems I think a car that new should never have. So I stand behind my statement of no more GM's. B.

Every person in the USA being granted a million dollars would generally be a good thing too, but it's not the place of the government to make it happen.

...whoops, that remark probably belongs in "friendly politics" delete if necessary...

I am thinking of buying a new car next year, and one of things that will be negotiated will be lifetime service/resetting/etc. of the sensors. I rotate my own tires and always have mounted snow tires to change over seasonally. I don't need "free scheduled oil changes", but I will have to have "free TPMS" service!!

My wife drove home and told me "there is a little red light on" One new tire later, luckily the mag wheel was alright.

I made a trip to the landfill during my day a few weeks ago. I must have picked a screw. About a mile away from the site I pulled over to check my tires. All looked okay. At my next job, the neighbouring business was a small town automotive repair shop. They fixed my tire during my service call. No down time changing a tire road side, no lost service call. I figure it saved me couple hundred bucks and a pita. I like tpms. I just wish the programming and serviceability was more user friendly.

It would be /could be better if, there were a standard. such as OBD 2. B-4 OBD 2. I think every manufacture had a different method of retrieving codes or different codes. Now ,with the OBD 2 standard, anyone can purchase 1 scan tool that will plug into just about any manufacture's port and read most codes

tire inflation also effects antilock braking an underinflated tire has a smaller diameter than one properly inflated, thus causing bogus wheel speed readings. regardless most people are too inept to check tire pressure themselves.

I've tested my car extensively (many hundreds of times), activating ABS from 115 mph on down, with tire pressures ranging from 16 psi up to 36 psi, ambient temps ranging from 45F up to 108F, and tire temps all over the map... and the ABS does it's thing flawlessly regardless.

PS - The tests were performed in a controlled on-track environment... not on public streets.

It doesn't. The same personality of person who drives with low tires, can/will ignore a little reminder icon.

I have a 2013 Chevy truck with TPMS and Onstar. It tells me on the dash display if a tire gets low. After I fill tire tire to the correct pressure and drive it the warning goes away. The next time I check the on board diagnostics it shows what the tire pressure in each tire is.
OnStar runs a diagnostic each month and sends me an Email report. They recently sent me a report that it was time to rotate the tires. I rotated the tires myself but saw no place or way to reset it on the report. The following months diagnostics must have sensed I had rotated the tires since I didn't get a warning to rotate the tires.

Well I always knew what PMS was but did not know that tires suffered the same symptoms.

:eek:Yeah, I thought this thread was going to be about one of the female TBN members' personal problem. But my truck and car is a 1999. And since were are on the subject, how come the modern vehicle doesn't just go ahead and air up the faulty tire?

Next time it reminds to rotate your tires, don't do it for a couple months to see if really sees it or just a one time reminder. Just for curiosity.
