Service Animals

Here in Ontario a service dog MUST certified by an official body, just because one claims a dog to be a service dog doesn't cut it or else you get the "Service Bees"

Eddie - I beleive your wife was visited by a well trained Therapy Dog not a Service Dog. There is a difference.

A service dog is trained to help people with disabilities such as visual impairments, mental illnesses, seizure disorders, diabetes, etc. A therapy dog is trained to provide comfort and affection to people in hospice, disaster areas, retirement homes, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and more.Jul 10, 2017

Check local state laws and the requirements from the institution where the dog is "working". I had, and used a "therapy" dog for hospital and nursing home visits. Run of the mill discarded dog who loved people who was trained to behave, and never met a person who she didn't like.

The funny thing this is where the AKC is trying to make some money now...

What is the offical body and what are the requirements?

This is where everyone is scambling to make money...

Our local Farm and Home store allows dogs inside. The times I've saw one in there it's been well behaved.

Willard is a very smart dog. He could easily go into the store with me without a leash. He's very considerate of humans and other pets. I would never consider taking him in the store. He's still just a dog. I have no right to infringe on someone's space with my dog.

In Germany, it's a very common sight to see someone sitting in a restaurant with their pet dog. Not totally sure, how I feel about that. I love animals, but mostly mine and not so much other peoples.

Well said. What bugs the $$$$ out of me is when somebody brings their lap dog into the store and puts them into the cart, with no regard for the next person and what they will put in there.

My dog is blind, so I'm his seeing eye person. He does pretty well though. Sometimes I swear he has some sort of Jedi sonar capability.

Ya know drssg . . . I'm very sure my 13 year old Aussie has vision impairment up close . . . don't we all. I commend you for being his eyes (your dogs).

The local farm stores have signs saying "well behaved dogs welcome", we have taken our dog there and seen other dogs there with the worst outcome being someone's dog taking a leak on the floor.
I can see the concern in a store that sells food, a restaurant, etc where the health department would frown on dog hair in the food (or a dog having an accident), but otherwise I am fine with well behaved dogs in stores.

I have never had a dog or cat throw up at the dinner table. But I did have an aquaintance, after having had too much to drink, sitting at a table in a bar, suddenly put his hands up to his mouth and vomit out between his fingers!

Pet stores are the only business that a dog should be allowed in.

Dog takes a pee on the floor, someone walks by before it's cleaned up and the customer slips and hurts themselves. Don't get me wrong, on average, dogs are probably smarter than the general public, but when you allow the general public in with their pets, I don't see anything good coming of it.

Now, if you own a business and let your employees bring their dogs in during working hours, different story IMO.
