If your 656 has 2 remote valves, one has to be in neutral in order for the other to work. That's about as basic as I can make it. Forget everything else and start there.

RickB:

Good News! I followed your suggestion and it was spot on-- it worked! The pounder now works perfectly! Whew!

RickB, JJ:

But now that the pounder works, I have one more question. When I put the loader in neutral, and open the valve (do you call this the detent?) on the tractor that controls the remote for the pounder, you can hear the tractor go under load and it starts to whine slightly. Then I checked to see if hyd oil was coming out of the pounder's hyd return hose into the sump and there was none. In a open center system, shouldn't there be oil coming out of the return line when the valve on the pounder is in neutral (not operating the pounder head) but the tractor's remote is open? But, would the pounder even go up and down if the Gresen valve on the pounder was in a closed center configuration when I needed an open center configuration?

Why I'm concerned is when I open the valve on the tractor for the loader's valve, the tractor doesn't make this noise and go under load as it does when connecting the pounder's valve.

Again, I sincerely appreciate both of your help!

Bill

It sounds as if the Shaver valve is set up for a closed center system. Yes, the driver will work, but the risk is with the tractor running its pump flow over relief while the driver valve is in neutral. Now investigate the plugs in the Shaver valve as discussed earlier. You want to see flow through the Shaver valve any time the tractor remote is activated.

Thanks RickB, will do. Stay tuned...

Early on, if you would have put a gage in the input to the shaver circuit, you would have your answers. With the Shaver valve in neutral, and setup for your tractor, there should be no pressure on the gage.

If the hyd gage shows full tractor pressure, then it is probably closed center, like Rick said. The whine you are hearing, is the relief going off, and when you hear this whine, and with the Shaver valve in neutral, the tractor lines are holding pressure right up to the shaver valve. You should see pressure in the gage.

Air blown through the Shaver valve would have confirmed closed center.

Thanks JJ, I'll use these methods to test for closed center.

This is not your valve, but has some good illustrations and reading material.

Last page in particular.

Some valves will use a hex screw inside the port to close off the open core, and then a plug to close off the port.

Other valves use a PB sleeve port adapter and then close off the PB port.

Does the same thing.

From my pictures of the gresen valve, which plug do you think I should check?

Picture 3, large shiny hex nut. I believe the other plug with the indented hex, is another OUT port and is plugged because the other port is used, however, I would check out both ports.

You may find a long sleeved plug with two o-rings, or a hex screw, and a short plug.

Take pictures of both plugs and the inside of the ports.

I will check it out later this week and post pictures when the monsoon stops on the east coast!

I have this very same valve with a similar problem, previously used on a John Deere. I pulled the shiny plug and discovered it was a closed center plug. Took it to my local hydro shop and they said remove the plug and install an adapter for hose or QD. Disconnect FEL from "A" port on front block and plumb to inlet on driver. Run a hose back to FEL from new port on driver and all should work. I will test this tonight and post results.
