Shear Bolts

Hi ! does anyone have a good source to purchase some shear bolts from ?
I cannot find a local guy who has what I need in stock.

I have a Buhler snowthrower that needs:

5/16" x 1" Grade 8
1/4" x 1" Grade 2

How about it ? Any sources?

You're using a grade 8 bolt for a shear? Hmmm.
Not really sure where you can get these. If there's Stotz bolt in your town, they will have what you need. Also, you may try other tractor dealers. John

The length sure seems short. What diam shaft does this 1'' bolt go through? Just curious.

Yep ! I'm taking the info directly out of the Buhler Manual. It specs the same grade 8 for almost every one of their throwers. There are 2 of the Gr.8 that hold a coupling on the PTO shaft. ( Approx. 2") But the Gr. 2 is, of course, the weak point. This bolt is on the gear coupling that turns the "Auger" of the thrower. It's approx. 1".

Actually, I guess I shouldn't have said "couplings". They are more of a type of "Flange". I wish I could describe it better or post a diagram. But can't. Maybe someone wlse who has a Buhler/Allied?Farm King snow thrower can chime in.

Okay, I get it now. The 8s are only used for mounting, and the 2 is the shear bolt. That makes perfect sense now, but a grade 8 as a shear bolt probably wouldn't shear.

Tim,

Do a search on TBN for shear bolts and you should find lots of suggestions. The typical bolt sold by hardware or home center stores are grade 2 bolts although their pedigree is sometimes difficult to be certain. They will also most likey have grade 8 bolts. Look in your local yellow pages for specialty hardware stores as well.

I would not think that would be a problem. Every hardware store carries grade 2 bolts in that size, (no marks), and autoparts stores, (NAPA), carries that size grade 8's, (6 marks).

I would think any well stocked hardware store would have what you need. Even the local Tractor Supply carries multiple grades of bolts. I don't know if they have that particular size or not.

I don't know if he knew what he was talking about, but I had a conversation with a guy at a hardware store--he was shopping; he didn't work there, and we weren't talking about shear pins--who said that because they are hardened so that they don't give, Grade 8s will actually shear faster than a Grade 5s, though you can torque 'em much harder without breaking 'em.
