Re: Short Run of \'Different\' PT-425

I agree with pajoube on this one.

I do not currently own a gas model PT, but I had owned a 1425, predecessor to the 425 for a number of years and it had the steel tank that was on top of the hood. I never had any problems come up with this design. You just had to remember not to spill the fuel. Also, if I remember right, I never had any hissing or pressurization of the fuel. I see nothing wrong with the design, besides the hood being extremely heavy with a full tank.

Thanks for the echo!!

I love that heavy hood!! When showing my PT-425 to a new inquisitor, I will mockingly condemn the PT by saying: /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif "Look how flimsy they make this thing!! Here, raise the hood up!" It usually takes a novice 2, sometimes 3, attempts to lift it, as I reassure them that it doesn't have a latch! The typical response is: "Wow, this thing is built!!". To which I reply: "Yea, the rest of it is more sturdy though!!". That little demo gets their respect and their attention.

"" I never had any hissing ""

The gas cap that Power Trac used is made like a radiator cap. Normally it is sealed, but if the tank heats up enough to raise the pressure in the tank, a vent opens in the cap to relieve the excess pressure.

Re: Short Run of \'Different\' PT-425

I have the 425 with the steel tank and have no problems with it. I fuel with the cover closed using one of the new no vent cans with spill proof spout. The spout has a built in valve. You put the can on the fill (valve is still closed) push down opens the valve when you pick up the can the valve shuts you will not spill a drop. If you forget what you are doing it will shut off automatically when the fuel reaches the nozzel which is about 2" into the tank. I don't do this because I think it over fills the tank a little. Available at most auto parts stores try it you'll like it.

Re: Short Run of \'Different\' PT-425

well there is also a product out that is a ceramic type of insulating paint it gives a r-19 rating , im thinking of painting my tank on the engine side and painting the hood on the outside to reduce both heat types / from the engine and the sun . its called supertherm and im also thinking of putting it on top of the roof of the rop. i also thought of painting the muffler but still not sure if this would affect the engine in anyway or not

Re: Short Run of \'Different\' PT-425

Thanks for the tip, but after using, and misusing, gasoline for over 50 years, I am very comfortable around it, and really have no difficulties at all. Some of our members, however, sound like they are fueling with nitroglycerine!!!! Safety and precautions are fine, but some guys go way overboard with their fears!!

My favorite this time of year is a plastic spray bottle with adjustable tip that is filled with gas, and a lighter. When a solid stream of gas is squirted through the flame, it makes a great flamethrower! The tent caterpillars hate to see me coming!! Also good for getting a brush fire going again if the initial start fails.

I,m with you . Spill gasoline on a hot engine and it will just boil away.

Re: Short Run of \'Different\' PT-425

Interesting modification......I'm wondering what this will due to the engine temp???? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Short Run of \'Different\' PT-425

My guess is it will not raise the engine temp any noticable difference. Here's why I think that...

Look at a lawn tractor. The hood and side panel clearances are much less than the modification that was made on Bill's Power Trac. Also, with the top covered the engine heat will not add to convection heating of the hydraulic cooler. I would like to have before and after temps for comparrison, though. It would be interesting.
