shredder/chipper attachment modification

JJ,

I just went out and checked, and the only tag on the motor just says" Haldex-Barnes", a date, and a number "1300079" that looks more like a serial number than model number. If I come across the invoice it may have more information.

My machine is rated 15 gpm @ 3,200 psi I think. I was looking for something rated around 1800 rpm @ 12 gpm so that I would not have to run the engine wide open, but when I do it spins it at over 2000 I am sure. Runs great though!

The chipper is a BearCat model 73420 manual feed disk-type with 140 lb flywheel & 4 knives. It was available powered by either a 13 or 20 HP (in my case) Honda mounted on a trailer. Worked fine except that the trailer was too tippy to pull back into where most of the slash was, and it took too much time & effort to bring the slash out to the road. Now wherever I can get the PT I can chip away.

This is a chiper only, and not a chipper/shredder although one should be able to do the same thing. As I mentioned, I direct drive the main shaft via a flex coupling completely bypassing any indirect drives used with PTO shaft inputs. I can put everything back like it was in probably an hour or two.

Yes, a motor spool valve has the over-running function built-in, but I hooked this up like a mower head so I just turn the PTO switch ON and OFF. I will usually have the engine at fast idle when I turn it on and then ramp it up to whatever speed I want. I also idle it down for 30 seconds or so before turning the PTO switch off. The check valve between the in & out side of the motor seems to take care of the over-running issue. All hoses & fittings are 3/4".

Going out of town for a few days... will be happy to answer any more questions when I get back.

I decided to pass on doing a chipper modification for now, since I really need to get a chipper now to clear some shrubs and trees from my backlot. I know that the chipper modification would probably languish for awhile.

I keep a close watch on craigslist; they have them setup so I can dump an RSS feed for the tools for sale list straight onto MY YAHOO homepage, so I can watch the four or five nearby cities without any effort.

The mighty mac shredder that I was looking at looks like it is similar to a TPH-122, but with a slightly different mounting scheme, and maybe without the branch chute. Hard to tell from the pictures. For $200, it seems like a steal (retail for the TPH-122 is $1700+).

Tim,

That MacKissic appears to be a shredder only, without the heavy flywheel and cutting knives to chip with -- only the hammer-mill type flails. They made both versions to fit old garden tractors.

That's likely the reason that one is so reasonably priced.

I know a couple of guys who have those for Simplicity tractors. They do a good job on leaves, garden plants, and 1" twigs or less, but can't chip limbs.

Yeah.... my BearCat is a disc (or flywheel) type wood chipper only. It does not even do much with ponderosa pine needles except spit them out. However, most mulchers, shredders or chipper/shredders that are engine or PTO driven can be adapted to hydraulic. Just have to make sure hp and speed requirments are taken into account.
