Suspended from what? A sky-hook?

I've never seen/heard of such a thing...

It should not matter if the wheels are in the ditch, you are either pushing or pulling, or the mower is hanging from a boom. The mower and all 4 wheels should be riding the slope of the ditch, except using a boom You might have trouble at the very top of the ditch.

I'm not to concerned with mowing down inside a ditch, just with keeping the top of the weeds/grass growing down inside of the ditch about the same level as the lawn grass.
This is why I'm toying with the idea of an adjustable telescoping arm that extends out over the ditch.
The mowing device would be attached to the underside of this arm.

One of my ditches has sloped sides but the other 2 ditches have sides that are straight up and down.
One of the ditches can be trimmed from either or both sides, but the other 2 can only be approached from one side.

I have done a little more. Here is the part the the boom will be welded to.

The motor on the right is of PT's 48" mower deck. Its size in CC's is about ½ the size of the motor on the left. The one on the left (.7 cc's) is the one I bought for the side mower I am making. Pt's 48" mower has 16" blades with a one to own rato. I guess that is why a smaller motor is needed than what I need for my 28" blade at a one to one rato.

Since you are mounting the motor directly to the shaft via a lovejoy type coupling, let me offer a suggestion. In a direct drive hook up like you have, if you hit a solid object, the shock will be transferred to the hyd motor, and that isn't good. I would put a clutch type washer between the blade and the bolt so the bld would slip a little.
