Does anyone out there make a single tooth ripper for CUTs?

This seems like a useful implement to use for getting stumps out of the ground if you can't afford a BH.

Any thoughts?

Pls don't try to do this. As others will most likely agree, a really easy way to turn the tractor over on you!! I'd use a pick and shovel before I'd take a chance on using a subsoiler to get up stumps of any size. BobG in VA

I just ordered one, I called around the central & southern NH dealers & I didn't find one in stock. Most dealers didn't even know what I was asking for. I don't think it would work for your purpose. It's not like a ripper on a dozer. I'm getting one to rip the ground before I till it to remove roots & rocks. I believe it has a hinge point & a shear pin if it hits a immovable object.

I tend to not agree on it flipping the tractor. I use one often for rocks and subsoiling and have no problem with the tractor even hinting of raising up. The top link actually has compression on it similar to a moldboard plow. To lift the front end the top arm would need to be in tension, such as when lifting a log with the logging tongs. Then one just has to be careful.

The ripper tooth (or subsoiler tooth) is either in the ground or against a root (if that is what one is trying to sever) and much below the drawbar line of pull. The 3pt arms are doing the pulling and they are below the axle as well.

Not sure what you are thinking of, but doesn't seem like a single tooth ripper. I plan to give that a try to dig some pine stumps, but don't expect it will break the heavy roots, so will probably have to chop through them.

Any thoughts? Hope I am not being rude to your comment but am confused by it, nonetheless. And, you don't have to agree with me either /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have one and it works great for planting seedlings. I just rip a slit in the ground and insert a seedling and tamp the earth down around it. Get a couple of the shear bolts since you don't know how many big rocks are down there! I haven't tried it on stumps.

Mine saved me a lot of work when I buried a couple hundred feet of 4" SCH40 PVC from the downspouts..............chim

Thanks for the caution about flipping the tractor over. If the ripper catches on something below ground level, it seems to me that the reaction on the tractor would be just the opposite. The tractor should tend to dig into the earth. If however, you catch on something above where the tires rest on the ground, then you could maybe flip the tractor over. Working slowly and cautiously is the order of the day.

So, shvl73, what did you buy and where did you get it? What you are describing sounds worth looking into for me.

My thought is to rip up the roots around a stump to loosen it up enough to scoop up with the FEL. This would take maybe four or five passes from different directions. I'm not thinking of hooking to the side of a 30" stump and hoping to remove it in one pass.

After reading your replies, I did a google search for "subsoiler" and came up with this:

Howse Subsoiler

It looks like what I had in mind. Do you think an implement like this should be able to rip up and cut pine tree roots when pulled by a 30hp CUT?

We stock these for CUT by Worksaver at $195--The shank is not as long and a perfect match up to about 30 HP--Ken Sweet

I ordered mine from Northeastern in Epsom 736-7800.
I didn't ask what brand but I believe it'll be a Worksaver. The dealers I called were from $175-250 with a freight quote of $25 up to $75. I was just looking to find one on hand & would have driven to get it that day at any of those prices. I'll tell you there is a large Kubota/NH dealer in with locations in Plaistow & Tilton, I called Tilton & got a very pleasant guy on the phone, he was in sales but I don't think he knew what a tractor was. I specifically told him subsoiler or single tooth ripper, & he would check & call me back. He called & told me his manager knew exactly what I was looking for, It would be about a week to get & it would be about $700.00!
I thanked him & moved on.

I bought a King Kutter XB model for my TC18. The price was around $120 from TSC. It has both the middle buster and the ripper. I use mine for small stumps no bigger than about 5", works well. The tractor digs in before lifting the front end.

I found one in a yard full of old implements. I've a lot of shale down about a foot from the top. I have pulled up some really big slabs, when I hook something that the tractor won't pull up, I just loose traction.

I also bought the King Kutter from TSC but it was the 14" depth sub-soiler only. It was $159. Used it today for the first time to bust up a garden. It works great. I can see how it would be really helpful for installing underground piping or cabling.

I used a KingKutter Subsoiler from TSC ($138) for pulling out small ash stumps (<3 inches). It works well for that purpose. You might also try pulling the unit forward until the shank hits a root, then lift up with the three point. This helps break roots around the stump trunk. As long as the implement is hooked completely to the three point (use both the lift arm pins and the top link asssembly) you will not have any problem with flipping over. If you use only the lift arms to pull (eg.: dragging a log, using a trailer hitch ball) there is a chance to lift the front end.

The ripper I really liked was from MonroeTufline. I like the looks of the single shank ripper, but the $600 price tag put me off.

I have the Worksaver subsoiler, just like the one posted by Sweet Tractor. Pulled by a 20 hp CUT, it works suprisingly well for pulling smaller stumps. I've tried to rip roots surrounding larger stumps, starting 2-3' from the stump, and had some luck with pines. It pops good size rocks out as well. For the money, it is definately worth a try. I ordered mine at T & T power in Pembroke.

I'm going by T&T this afternoon to pick up my chainsaw from service. Maybe I'll ask about the subsoiler as well.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question.
