Yes, the waste is obvious.

But it shows to everyone that you do not need the productivity of that land to provide income or food to yourself and family.

I DO plan to learn how to grow food for myself, family, and friends... I just need to smooth out the bumps, so I don't loose teeth every time I need to drive my tractors on it!

Jim,
I don't think you owe any of us an explanation as to why you wan't to smooth out your lawn. Do what works for you and your family and enjoy the new home. I am not a fan of being politically correct.

I'm in the same boat. I have about 7 acres of old farm land land I'm building on. I plan on planting about 7 acres of grass. I also have deep ruts in the soil from years of farming. My plan is to disk the soil and then use a chain harrow for final smoothing and covering of seed.

Later today I will be picking up a soil testing kit. Based on the results I'll use that type of grass that is recommended.

You can do alot with a box blade and an old set of drag harrows. I was/am in the same situation as yourself. I've got an 8N with a 6ft BB and I scored a free set (6 sections) of drag harrow for free cause my buddy was tired of moving them once or twice a year. Sure it takes awhile and there is a learning curve to the BB, but it works very well when you get the hang of it.
Drop the scarifiers down all the way and drive around every which way to smooth out the ruts, once that's done you can repeat but with the scarifiers all the way up or out if you want. When you get it relatively smooth enough to drive around comfortably hook up the harrows, slap that puppy into 3rd and giver $XXt.
It takes awhile to do this but if your not in a rush you can do it bits at a time.

HA! After all the other ideas... I finally get one from you that's close to my original idea (i.e., minus the high cost of top soil). Thanks a lot, it'll give me more ideas to throw around with the guy down at Farm Depot, when I get ready to buy my first implements. Disc over it several times at various angles yu'll be surprised at how much it smooths contours.
chain harrow for a really fine surface...
Then roll it with a 10' roller... this should push any remaining stones into the surface.

Question: When you use your harrow with the spikes, do you run it with just the spikes in the soil or does the implement ride on the ground? Also i did not understand what the spikes were made from.
