Snapped excavator bucket tooth shank

You got plenty of advice how to go about getting the tooth shank off. Torching would be the messiest but can be done. Myself, I would air-arc. It takes a heavy duty cycle welder though. Another option would be to have a welding shop do it for you if you do not have equipment on hand.

Now once off, use 8018 welding rod and preheat the area to several hundred degrees before proceeding to weld.

At the welding shop I work at we regularly weld shanks (we call them adaptors) on excavator buckets. Everything from the little backhoe buckets to large 4 yard severe service buckets. The cutting edge and adaptors are preheated to 300f and make sure the inter pass temperature does not exceed 500f. I agree the esco adaptors do seem to be the most reliable but we dont generally have too many problems with any brand we use.

I also priced it with a local welder and he quoted $250 to $300 coming to my home. Looks like I will be doing it myself. Probably will be a little messy since all I have is an oxygen/acetylene torch and 7018 rod.

You can do a pretty surgical weld removal with oxy-fuel. Just run a small tip with low pressures and shave the welds down a little at a time. If you try to take the whole weld with 1 pass it will for sure be messy. Good luck !

For “shaving” cuts I like to pivot the torch on the nut that secures the cutting tip resting on the work. In this case the edge of the bucket.

Pick up a gouging tip for your oxy acetylene torch makes it a little easier to control

Another good option.

I’m usually too lazy to swap out the tip though ...

how did you make out with this project liberty2701? just curious, at work when we have a warranty claim or some sort or rework needs to be done it usually ends up being my job to cut it apart and rebuild it. Not complaining i actually like doing it.
