Had very severe storms run thru yesterday. About 4-1/2 hrs with no electric and torrential rain. Fortunately, as the pic shows, we had already finished up placing, trenching and tamping the gravel for the slab. Plenty of mud but not alot of damage, and I suspect the gravel has settled nicely /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Another view of the prepared gravel bed. We're ready to place the outer forms and set reinforcement for the slab pour.

For a detached garage, a slab with footers below the frost line is overkill and an un-necessary expense IMO. And, since we just bot the new house and the wallet is kinda light, well, the monolithic slab keeps me in budget too. The materials cost savings is significant. In case you're not familiar with monolithic slab construction, I've attached a cross section similar to what I am doing...

The mini-excavator was a good size to get into the tight spots when trenching for electric service. I just wish he had brought a little smaller bucket than 18". Still beats the heck out of a hand shovel. Fearless guard dog Sophie is surveying the backfill caused by the rain... last night the trench was full to the top with water.

It looks like a great project, and coming along nicely. You were well prepared for that rain. Often a rain like that midway through a project like yours can be more disastrous.

I'd put a drain in, as well as plastic down under the concrete slab.

Will look forward to more pics as your project progresses.

Hopefully this trench angle won't cause problems with the conduit bends. I was going to lay a direct burial service line plus one 1" Schedule 40 PVC conduit for a telephone, cable TV, Cat 5 and alarm wire bundle and another 1-1/2" Schedule 40 PVC conduit for future use. What am I missing?

Poor dog Sophie doesn't want to 'pick' that tennis ball out of that mud trench. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Wants you to get it for her. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hot and cold running water, and maybe a dumb waiter that will deliver food to your 'shop'. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Had to move some plantings temporarily, it was a real tight squeeeze thru the arbor garden and paver walkway. Momma was plenty nervous about this, but the guy was pretty good and only skimmed thru here in an attempt to be kind to the roots. I'll have to go back and do a little hand digging to meet code, no biggie.

Thanks beenthere - it's no EddieWalker scale project, but it's plenty big enough for me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif An in-floor drain is cost prohibitive due to a bunch of necessary code improvements. I was thinking about adding two poly lines, one supply and one drain return, from the house. But it is uphill so problematic for the drain line... maybe a pump? I would just blow out the lines for winter. This pic shows the last leg of the trench to the house.
