MOOSE. We we have smaller moose then you would find in alaska. A hunt ranges from 5 days, sunday to friday, or monday to friday. You normally would do glassing, walking down in the woods still hunting, and on Atv to selected areas. 50 Inches would be a big bull, unlikely to get any larger. I would say if your looking for a big trophy of antlers its probably not your place. But if your looking to get some moose meat and possibly get a rack of 20 inches to 40 inches or a cow then it would be a possibility. Its not very much time to pass up many animals and I'd hate to see someone be disspointed in doing so. We have been doing it since the late 1950's. My father passed it on to me and so on. The moose will come out in one complete piece normally, hide and all and get butchered locally or you can bring back 4 quarters etc. We carry them out on J5 bombardier tractors like you 've seen in the picture....blowdowns, marsh, brush 4 and 5 inch trees doesn't stop it. Its all metal, 4000 lbs, 115 hp geared walking speed in low, actually slower then walking speed...it will stand on end and continue to go..if it doesn't flatten it, it will climb up on top of it and break it down. We are located about 35 miles from the ferry linking the island of newfoundland to Nova scotia canada. IMG_7107.jpg

But boy oh boy, they just won't quit huntinng! I remember having to pick ours up and carry it home. In the winter, my buddy and i would hunt rabbits with bows. Never hit one on the run, close hits, but when they stopped and standing still not to bad. One problem was finding the arrows.....:( didn't matter if you hit the rabbit or not, the arrows would often be found next spring, after the snow melted.

Many winters ago (pre cell phones) I was driving past a group of rabbit hunters who were staying in campers. One morning there was only one parked there; when I came out that night it was gone.

The next day I was driving up the woods road when a big male beagle came trotting up the road. I opened my truck door and he jumped in like he owned it. :D There was a name, address, and phone number on the collar; but I didn't want to paunch a day's pay to drive back out to town. For some reason I feared that if I tied him to the truck and the hunters came back they'd think I was stealing him, so he went in the woods with me.

Sure enough; first thing he got on a rabbit track; and I worked all day without seeing him. I walked out after dark and could still hear him baying... no doubt the coyotes eventually got him. I've always regretted not doing things differently... in the overall scheme of things what is the loss of one day's pay under those circumstances?

never used dogs to hunt rabbits, how does that work?

If you ever tried it you would be hooked..I can't wait for deer season to be over......Lots of action, fun to be with a group of guys doing it, it's not a stealthy hunt until the dogs start one and they happen to be coming your way

The dogs chase the rabbit and you have to be somewhere ahead of the rabbit, if it goes by you there's always more chances....the dogs will chase the darn thing till either you shoot it or they loose it (whichever comes first)

Check out my video and you can see just how far the rabbit (or hare in this case) is in front of the dogs.....they can't see the rabbit, only smell....many times 50 to 200 yds away

Those old bombardiers were built TOUGH! They were also great for low impact logging.

Around here the accepted method for hunting a moose is to drive around in the truck until you find one. (Also the way most people hunt grouse...) Most hunting is done on private industrial land, and we're not too keen on people driving off established roads.

Seasoned rabbit hunters years ago will tell you that's the worse thing about running beagles (losing them).....but nowadays we run Astro GPS collars and shock collars on the dogs, so losing them and/or not controlling them is the thing of the past with today's technology.....I've never lost my dogs.....There's been twice when they stayed out all night deep in a swamp on bunnies (before I had the shock collar setup) but I never lost them and never had to come back for them the next day

It makes rabbit hunting so much better, I never have to chase and tackle them down....mine come to me when I call them, otherwise:shocked:.....and they love their peanut butter/jelly sandwich I always have waiting for them when we are done....:dog:

We find dead deer injured by hunters every year on our property. Some years we found two rotting carcases. Bow hunters are the worst offenders. They take chance shots, just injure the animal and let it run away with an arrow sticking out of it. Isn't it the rule that you find the animal and finish it? Just today the guy who is combining my beans told my wife that there is "slow" apparently injured buck at the back of the property. I wouldn't mind if somebody comes to my property to retrieve injured animal but some people don't bother to follow the blood. I wish hunters have more respect for the animals. She called few people to come and finish it but so far couldn't find anybody. Last night our neighbor saw a buck collapse and die just by our mailbox. Shortly after another neighbor was driving around and took it. Al least that one wasn't wasted.

happens here too. land owners around here get very angry if you follow deer onto their property, but i agree that you should do your best to find an animal you shoot, and not shoot if you can't make a clean kill.

it is a problem i have with youth hunts. it is great to get the kids out there, but it's hard to watch them miss and injure geese/ducks, especially if you can't finish the geese off. however if the kids can't get out and hunt will they have any interest in it?

A friend of mine sent me this petition a year or so ago. Not sure of current status, and I can't provide a source. I'm sure all of you will be appropriately concerned. I'll provide details in two posts, for reasons that will become clear. Here is the petition:

"I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA THIS KIND OF THING WENT ON IN COLORADO. I WAS COMPLETELY SHOCKED WHEN I FOUND OUT!

Fox Hunting in Colorado :
I felt a real need to forward this to you and ask you to do the same....
Please don't misread my intentions.... I am in NO way in agreement with any type of gun control, but after seeing this.... I am, unfortunately, in agreement that something needs to change.... While I may agree that hunting is an ethical God-given right, I think that we would have to agree on this....

Fox hunting in Colorado should be banned!

Please help ban fox hunting in Colorado !
THIS MADNESS MUST STOP!! I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA THIS KIND OF THING WENT ON IN COLORADO. I WAS COMPLETELY SHOCKED WHEN I FOUND OUT! "
