So why do you buy Kubota? Even though Roy says JD's best? :)

We bought the L3940 because it's years ahead of the JD 4*20 series. Even the
guys over at RedPowerMagazine will tell you that about JD and CaseIH. When I
told them over there that we had bought a Kubota one guy said JD and CaseIH
R&D Dept. needs to take a Kubota home for a weekend and see what they're
missing. We have 5 Red tractors and 1 Orange tractor.

With Kubota's new load sensing in their HST plus series there is no comparison. John Deere needs to either get with the program or go into the green lawn ornament business.;)

I'll compare my L5740 to my father-in-law's JD 4320, even though there really isn't a comparison. The Kubota is light years head of the Deere, which I have several hours of seat time. Here are some negatives I've found with the Deere:

1. The engine is loud and vibrates compared to the 4 cyl Kubotas I've owned.
2. HST is not nearly as smooth, even compared to my L3710.
3. Tilt steering won't stay where you lock it, so steering wheel suddenly unlocks and drops and then relocks on its own in a different position, which is very frustrating.
4. Cheap plastic steering wheel.
5. Cheap plastic fuel tank where the filler neck is out of round and the fuel cap leaks fuel all over the place if you fill the tank and then use the tractor.
6. FEL is junk. The arms wiggle side to side allowing the bucket to also move side to side, especially if you have any weight in it on a side hill. Makes moving dirt very exciting on anything but level ground!!!! Has done this since day 1 from the dealer, and the loader has never been off the tractor. Just the way they are built.
7. Lots of "Made in China" stamped steel on Deere.
8. Backhoe hydraulics are very "jerky" and seem to stick, almost like there is air in the line, and then it catches and moves. Has been like this since day 1 also.
9. Price. MAN, THAT GREEN PAINT MUST BE EXPENSIVE!!
10. Plastic hood and fenders crack.
11. High fuel consumption for a direct injected diesel.

I've owned some older Deere's in the past (430, 650), and I think they were better quality machines back then, especially with the Yanmar engines. I am grateful that he lets me use his tractor when I need a backhoe, but it's such a joy when I climb back on my cheaper orange tractor. I have never had any issues with any of my Kubotas (L235, L3710, L5740), and I would buy another before I even thought about a green tractor.

I have always been a big Deere fan, but the truth is, it is getting harder and harder to defend them. The new ones just don't have the same quality that we've come to expect from Deere. I can't speak for the larger machines, because I've never owned one, but I would have to say that with Kubota you get more for your money in the compact to mid sized tractors. JD still has the best around with the smaller residential lawn care tractors, not cheap but great machines if you can get past all the plastic. Then there's the color. Well as far as I'm concerned nothing even comes close to that beautiful JD green. I think even Kubota fans would have to admit that.

Yes, I admit that - I would prefer JD green  But the old saying goes: Form follows function :D

I will admit the green is probably one of the prettiest colors out in tractor land, but what I really do not like is the yellow seats on them.
To me the yellow on the seat makes me sick to my stomach, and always has even before I had a tractor preference.

Wow, that is sad!

Sounds like the senior management of John Deere are chasing the greed factor instead of the quality factor. Didn't they learn anything from the past four years?

Honestly I am not brand loyal at all between Kubota and Deere, I like them both equally. With that said, there are models/classes of each I like better.

Generally speaking, for compact tractors I'd go with Kubota every time. They basically invented the compact tractor market in this country and really have better engineered machines IMO. Not all the Kubota's have the creature comforts of the Deere's, but in my experience the Kubota's are much more trouble free. The only two compact Deere's that still have some promise are the 3005 and 4005.

We had a Deere 4400 and it was the worst tractor we've ever owned. Multiple front axle problems, lots of broken plastic, wobbly loader mounts, broken rear housing due to the 3pt hitch mounting tabs (twice), new hydraulic cooler, and finally the PTO clutch went out which is when we traded it. It was replaced by another Deere, but this time a 5045e, which has been a very solid tractor so far (and an amazing value in that size class.)

That brings me to my next class, utility tractors. For the most part I like the Deere's better in the 40-60 hp utility class. The Kubota MX4700-5100 seem like about half the tractor that the 5000e series Deere's are. Weight wise and construction wise you are comparing a large compact (Kubota) to a small farm tractor (Deere). The one nice thing Kubota has going is the HST in that size. The larger utility tractors are kind of a toss up. We have a M9540 Kubota and it has been a great tractor. That time around we went with Kubota over Deere due to a lower price and less electronic crap in the cab.

Overall, I try to pick models from either Deere or Kubota that would best suit my needs. One thing I will never consider buying again is a compact Deere tractor, Kubota from now on in that size.

/ So why do you buy Kubota? Even though Roy says JD's best? :) #209
#1 - 15% difference in price for what I perceived as equal capabilities
#2 - co-worker's recommendations
#3 - dealer interest in selling me a tractor
#4 - Deere tractor was not really a "Deere" so what I was really looking at was a Yanmar supported by Deere. What I would really be doing is buying a Yanmar but getting support from a dealer that didn't show much interest in my business in the first place.

This is in reference to this JD thread: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/john-deere-buying-pricing/179889-so-why-do-you-buy.html

Specifically in reference to Roy's "Why buy a Deere? Because we want the best..." and "Yep...Kubotas...fine tractors and well suited to those who can't afford the best" comments.

Let's see if we can shake him up a little!

I looked at JD, NH, Mahindra, & then Kubota. I bought my L3940 HST 'cause it's the most awesome-ist!! :)

Simple answer, not complex at all.......
..............because Roy is FOS.
