If they are Reds they will definitely go after the wires and can burn your place if left there. A guy I know had weird electrical problems and checked to find they had stripped long strands of insulation and all the wires in the trunk were just bare flying in formation. 12 gauge took care of that. I had a problem with mice at my old place doing that too. They peeled 18" of wire back from the well pump control so they were all flying in formation as well.
Give them something to eat, good old Decon. I leave it sitting there in the basement up high and in the attic and barn . No fan of Tomcat here either. I liked the idea of the block to keep other critters out of it but noticed very little nibbling had taken place after a very long cold winter. Use Decon in the little boxes so they can share dinner with their buddies. If you get one stuck in the attic and you have a 22 get a box of birdshot. It will take care of a squirrel and not punch a hole in your roof. Even if you get rid of them put out the Decon and switch it out every year or when the box is empty and you will be covered from all the gnawing vermin.
