Starlink

I see this on Residential $50 a month View attachment 4995099
I'm pretty sure there's some fine print or that is new. When I looked it was something like $120/month with unlimited data. And it still had the stipulation of speed throttling after certain limit. Sure, the data is unlimited but I bet it gets parsed after some amount. You won't get the full speed once you pass that amount.

Terms change. I have the $80 plan with free equipment and use 1.2+ terrabytes every month. Never had any throttling

It wasn't a restriction. It is State Law because I live off a State Highway. A 70mph highway at the time. It was lowered to 60mph after it was widened. I'm pretty sure all state and federal roads have break away sign post requirements. I've seen many downed road signs on I-35. Either from sleepy truck drivers or the wind. My state road intersects I-35 about 3.5 miles from me. Someone took out a stop sign down there a few days ago.

USPS has regulations on mailboxes. Not sure about the post but for sure a minimum and maximum height of the box itself. I'm in a rural area. They deliver mail by reaching out of the vehicle and putting it in the mailbox. And yes, on that 60mph highway.

We have the same type of mailboxes with a wood post but we're far from a highway. The snowplows have done a number on my box this winter so I'm going to replace it with some type of swinging mailbox.

I had Brightspeed dsl @ 6 mega bits/sec for the last 10 years.
I would download linux .iso files (3 to 4 Gbytes) in the mornings when I was
actually getting nearly 6 mega bits/sec and the download speed was always about 650 to 700 kilo bytes/sec, which is about right (1 Mega bit/sec = 125 kilo bytes/sec)

I switch to Starlink on the $50/month plan @ 100 mega bits/sec.
I have constantly speed tested Starlink since then and I'm always
getting 90 to 100 mega bits/sec like it's supposed to.

However, when I download an .iso file now, I'm still only getting
around 700 kilo bytes/sec when I should be getting over 12,000 kilo bytes/sec !!!
Doesn't make any sense to me. Anyone have any idea why ?

Actual data transfer speed depends on the connections and capabilities of both the server side and client side. It could be that the server hosting those files you're downloading has a slow internet connection or a fast connection but is very, very busy so the connections are slow. But the more likely thing, which occurs a lot with public downloads that aren't from a specific corporate site, is that the site hosting those files throttles connections to ensure many people can download without overwhelming their server/network.

If you want, post a link to one of those files here and some of us can try and help demonstrate.

The new plans are all unlimited data but each has a speed cap. $50/mo gets you 100Mb/s, $80/mo gets you 200Mb/s, $120 gets you their max residential speed, which I've found to be 250-430, but more often just under 300Mb/s.

And frankly, for most home use, 100Mb/s is going to be just fine. Heck, my wife and I got by decently 10 years ago when the only ISP for our home was a "5 Mb/s" DSL line that routinely got us about 3.5 Mb/s. We streamed standard definition Netflix over it and both worked from home with occasional (non-video) Teams/WebEx meetings.

As Starlink's sat network has improved they have moved from data volume restrictions to speed restrictions.

Well, installed the smurftube between outside where fiber box on side of house, and my pantry where modem will be. The fiber company is doing a site survey next wednesday and will schedule my install……… :p :p

Good luck! I hope that the installation goes well.
