Starlink

What is the ethernet connection used for and is it necessary?

You can either hook up one client device for its network connection or you can use it to feed the WAN (input) side of a different wifi router or mesh system. The wifi router included with the dish is decent but some folks have other needs.

Stop giving it a nickname. Problem solved. It's the dish.

Thanks for the info about the ethernet connection. Doesn't sound like I will need one.

Is anyone using the new Gen 2 dish yet and if so, what is the router range?

I want to mount it on my garage roof about 60' away from the house.

if u want any real speed, your going to have to go wired or directional antenna. especially going through a house.

I'll 2nd that. For moderate obstructions like a few walls or a few hundred feet a properly aimed directional antenna on 1 side will get the job done. With lots of distance you need high gain directional antennas on both ends. That won't get through thick obstructions though.

With a high gain directional antenna on you can hit in-flight wifi if you are near an airport. Not reliable at all & good luck tracking the plane for any length of time. That's at least 5,000'.

Can you post a link to this high gain equipment and how would it connect it to the Gen 2 Starlink router?

you treat it like a long ethernet wire. you will need another Wifi AP in the house. and the ethernet addon if its gen2 for the starlink
