starter turning backwards

I have a 2516 Mahindra. Tried to start it nothing. After a further look I discovered the starter is turning backwards. Any suggestions as to why and how to correct?

Need more info such as, was it running fine before and then suddenly won't start? How do you know it is running backwards?

Yes it had been running no problem. No problems. Hadn't replaced anything such as battery. Took starter off and two different friends helped me check it to discover it was spinning backwards.

It spins but wouldn't engage so that's when we discovered it was spinning backwards

Could you post a picture of the wiring to the starter? Also, is anything else electrical on your tractor not working?

Have your two friends return and swith positions so that they hook the wiring back up correctly. Red is not ground, its the other red meat er, ground. Otherwise think positively, now you have a lot more reverse gears !!!

Im guessing there has been a perceptual error on rotation. The lack of engagement is likely a mechanical issue in the starter solenoid.

when you engage with power does the drive spin out from housing or stay in place and just spins if all it does is spin you are probably using the field post which will only allow gear to spin not engage or spin out is this the case

or just stuck on the shaft , try tapping in in an outward direction and see if it will loosen up.

When that happens for me I try WD40 and it often cures the fault.
(Generally dried up old grease is the problem.)

New battery has post backwards to original ones, battery connected backwards causing starter to run backwards. Hope you haven't damaged the charging system.
