TexasJohn, I got a mist fan from Walmart ($84, with 4 extra nozzles=8) that I use in my outside work area. it has 4 mist nozzles in the front of the fan and a hose connection for the water. I checked the temperature yesterday was 102, in the area in front of the fan it was 79. After it runs a while the ground in front is damp. I have it so it does not blow on the tools. I also have a misting system on my porch with the nozzles connected with PVC. The porch does get damp even on low humidity days. From my experience with misters they are great outside when it is hot, but I would not want to them indoors and get my tools or shop floor damp/wet.

Mornin Don,
Gee those are neat !!! We had mid 90's mon and tue and it was brutal, maybe I needed that just for a reality check what you guys put up with on a regular basis :) Yesterday wensday, it was in the 80's but it felt like the 70's after mon and tue :) I guess its all relative. I know everything came to a screeching halt for two days, work wise :)

Mrs 3RRL finally broke down and wanted a pool at our camground. Temperatures this year seem very high and Summer has just started out here. There are many weekends where it's been in excess of 100°. This coming weekend it's supposed to gt to 107°!!!
So she bought one and we filled it up. When we're alone up there, it's neat to skinny dip and keep cool. Never thought I would appreciate a stupid pool like this...

OK, txdon, thanks for the user experience report... got it... damp on floor under mister. Today I bought 6 rope hoists from Harbor Freight.. $2.50 each, 1000 lb work load. I''m going to experiment with attaching them to the very top of the ridge of my work building.. bout 17 ft up... and see if I can lift the simple trial mist system I have up that high and observe temp drop and moisture at ground level on slab...

Thanks for the wallmart mister/fan pointer... I had not observed that mister for that price... good price in my opinion... I'm assuming you would recommend it?

Oooooo, well, this is really about normal temperatures in these parts, bro. The thing I think is abnormal is that we haven't hit 110° or above yet.One thing that is out of the historical norm is the humidity. The "valley" region used to be known for a very dry heat but, the past 10 years has brought increased humidity. That's probably what you feel, because for the last couple of weeks we have gotten the influence from a couple of wast Pacific hurricanes. (It's been drizzling here at home in the hills for the last few hours and it's 97 outside.) My girlfriend, a Fresno native and resident for 50 years, constantly complains about the heat ... I constantly tell her that there are plenty of places cooler than the "valley" (and environs) and that she should seriously consider moving to the coast or high country. Me?, I chose to live here and, I like it here.
Good job on the pool! The cheaper the better.
Cheers!

That would mean no skinny dipping for me. Does she not whoop you for that?

My wife and I never had AC until I was transfered to Sioux Falls , SD. in 1978 (from northern KY). SD would get in the 90's but extremely low humidity and constant wind. The AC was on 3 days in 3 years. Still didn't own a car with AC.
Next move was to Houston Tx. Now that was HOT and HUMID all summer. AC ran from about May to October for 3 years. Finally bought a car with AC to use on the long commutes home every day.
Next move was to south FL (Broward Co.). It was Hot and Humid but with the ocean breeze it wasn't nearly as bad as Houston but the AC ran all summer for 4 years.
in 1988 transferred back to Cincinnati metro (northern KY where I still live) and it is hot and humid but no where near TX or FL. I never turn the air on in my car. My wife turns the AC on in the house but I turn it off whenever the temp drops below 86. When the temps are in the 90's everyday I still work outside all weekend and evenings. I just don't like AC. My wife won't come out of the AC.
It's what you get used too. My mother is 86 and still won't use AC.

In Provence it gets hot. For sevral weeks it has been in the high 90's but at night it cools down to 72 to 74. In the morning it stays cool say below 85 outside until about 10:30 in the morning. We have steel shutters with insulation inside the shutters and jsut close up the house, all windows and doors until around 8pm. We are able to maintain the eveing and morning coolness until around noon or 1pm. Then we are hot say upper 80's until after 8pm. Basically we just go "au natural" and use fans and it is tollerable. Don't work outside though in the 90's during the day. Only work outside in the mornings. The cement houses with the tile roofs will keep you about 5 to 7 degrees cooler than the outside air if you close the shutters.

A local retraurant has those misters around an outside terrace. THey work surprisingly well.

Bird, people talk about how great the good ole days were, but there was plenty about 'em that wasn't so good.

You're sure right about that, Tom. I don't miss that old outhouse and lack of indoor plumbing at all. I don't miss having to milk that cow twice a day regardless of the weather or how I felt at the time. And I sure don't miss the lack of air-conditioning.:D
